82-95ºF climate, growing some Golden Teachers for the first time, any advice? Substrate is already colonized
    #27784124 - 05/19/22 10:51 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Hi! First of all let me introduce myself as I'm new to the forum.
I've tried magic truffles (sclerotia) a couple of times with a friend but we decided to grow our own mushrooms. We will be growing some Psilocybe Cubensis, Golden Teachers.

We bought a kit where the substrate is already colonized, you just have to fill it with water and leave it on the refrigerator for 12h, then spray them with water 2-3 times a day in a grow bag.

Around here the temperature is between 82-95ºF lately, closer to 95 until sunday, next week it'll probably be max 85 but I can't know for the next weeks which could be also hot.

I've been told I need to be overly cautious as the big problem with these temperatures is mostly the high risk for contamination, I've brewed beer before so I do know a little on sanitization and so as beer can get contaminated easily too.

Is this it? Will the mushrooms grow ok if I am really cautious with disinfecting everything around them?

I also have a quick question about water, I've seen I should use bottled water for hydrating and spraying so the environment is moist, can I use the same water bottle if I keep it closed in the refrigerator or should I be replacing the water bottle every few days to avoid the water contaminating the substrate?

As you can see, I'm super paranoid about contamination, it's the same when I'm brewing haha, I just like to be extra sure that it won't go bad.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome,
95F could lead to problems, it's really high. 80-85 should be the upper limit, I'd wait until the temps drop.

The bottled water is bull shit as long as you can drink your tap water yourself, it will be good for the mushrooms. I always use straight tap water and had no problems.

Also do not mist it 2-3 times a day, this is also a pile of crap. You should only mist when you see that there are no watrer beads on the surface (check out the first link in my signature, it will give you an idea how it should look like). Best way of growing mushrooms is to get the preparation part down and the leave the boxes be until you harvest.
A fully colonized kit is not the best, but still good a place to start to get the bells and whistles down. I did it like you too, now I'm doing everything by myself and you will soon too.

You'll get hooked FAST, trust me.

You can absolutely grow successful in that temp range.
But you absolutely want the cleanest spawn for that.
Premade stuff never knows what you get.
I'd poke some tiny holes to the bag,
and maybe bring in a fan for air movement,
but pointing away from the bag.
With poking holes there's no need to open the bag that often,
unless you need to mist.
Tap water all day long.

Fingers crossed

Thanks for the advice, the problem with temps though is that, as summer is approaching and is real hot here (I live in Spain, Madrid, which gets real hot during summer), next week may be 80-85 degrees, but the next one could well be over the 95 this week is, we can usually get around 100 degrees the hottest days, though that''s usually at August, still, May, June and July are hot, specially June and July.

I know it's not the best conditions but we wanted to go into it hahaha

I think (I'm not sure 100% though) that the bag has some holes already, I could be wrong though.

Thanks for info and yeah! Fingers crossed!

One little thing I just thought about, as I need to put the cake (it's on a plastic container and it will be closed) for 20hs on the fridge, do I need to clean the fridge? Or would it be sufficent to clean the surface where the container will sit? The fridge obviously has food inside.

Thanks again!

Then you should really take care to have a 150% clean spawn, like Goatrider said.
Just a minimal bacterial presence in the spawn will completely screw up your operation in no time at these temps. 95-100F are around a regular human body temperature so it's for bacteria.

It's mostly the same for beer anyways so I think I will be fine if I take good care hahaha, at least that's what I hope for, the good thing as I said is I'm super paranoid about this kind of stuff being completely clean, which helps a lot I think.

It helps until it doesn't
Don't overthink and overstress the whole process. the less you fuck around with your stuff, the better the mushrooms will come out.
We all were at that point too, my first 2-3 boxes went to shit during the first flush because I couldn't stop myself from checking the surface condition yatta yatta yatta. Now it's just prep the coir, mix the spawn, check it once a week, harvest after 3 weeks, repeat.

You may give a picture but i´m quite sure it´s a filter patch,
just providing a very small amount of gas exchange.
That´s why they advise to open multiple times a day.
We all set up our grows to have continuous passive air exchange for evaporation,
without losing moisture every few hours.
Bags are my favourite grow chambers,
and i promise you, poking holes is a big benefit.
Especially in that temp range you want a bit more air movement.

It´s never a bad idea to have a clean fridge,
but don´t overthink it.
The myc should be fully colonized,
and the lid is closed.
The fridge is also kind of bullshit advice.
Cubes don´t need a cold shock.
That´s some kind of "last option" to me,
if they absolutely don´t want to pin.
Soaking at room temp is what we all do here

I got the cake in the freezer filled with water, I was as meticulous as I was capable of, tomorrow temps will be around 80-85deg Farenheit (22-28deg Celsius) so I think I'll be fine for now, fingers crossed on no contam.
