Help stepping flame game up?

What do you all use for flame sterilizing scalpels and needles?
I've been able to get by with the long bbq lighters, but I can't stand the residue. I like the alcohol lamps... but does that turn out to be more expensive? With it being lit the whole time I'm working, I can see me blowing through a lot of alcohol and running out quicker than I'd like? Torches are great, but that will still leave a residue right?
Today I'm feeling like I would like to step up my flame game from a cheap bbq lighter. But I would like some extra reasons to justify it's value. I've seen videos with real heating equipment, which is certainly an overkill for my needs currently. So what are you all using? Is there no point in switching from dollar store lighters? Or is the lamp the only way? What's the meta for flame sterilizing these days?

I use my dab torch it doesn't leave a residue or anything for me. I bought my scalpel and 100 blades when I bought it but that's been lasting me like a year and a half I still have more then half the blades left. I do like the idea of a alcohol lamp though just light it and have it going the whole time your doing your sterile work. Torches do kinda suck because you have to turn em on n off, which is easy but a lamp would be easier. Kinda curious what the meta would be considered. I've seen people use a bunch of stuff but in the end whatever works for you to get good results is fine.

If you really want to step it up, get an infrared induction sterilizer!

Alcohol lamps would definitely be a step up from a lighter. Its only around $10 or You can easily make your own with some half pint jars. 1. drill a hole on top center 2. attach a thick shoelace 3. Pour denatured alcohol or 90% iso 4. Light after shoelace soaks.
Also should make a cap to extinguish flame after use.
But honestly for $15 at walmart id rather pick up a propane torch

I use both a torch and an induction. Depends on where I'm at. Gourmets are down in the shop. They get the good stuff. For now. I'm getting another for home use. Please don't tell my wife 😂😂

I've got an alcohol lamp/candle and I consider it one of the wasteful investments I've made in this hobby. It can't get a needle red hot no matter how long I hold the needle in or above the flame.
I use this with a can of butane fuel from walmart. It heats a scalpel or needle red hot within seconds and doesn't leave a residue (if it does I've never noticed.) Sondiko Butane Torch Head

I absolutely love my little butane torch. Hand-held. Light it up with one hand, hold the scalpel in the other. I haven't calculated the cost. The speed of reaching red-hot blows away a BBQ lighter.

I've used torches and all sorts of things over the years. I prefer an alcohol burner with a cotton wick and filled with 95% ethanol (everclear). I burn through about a half pint in about 12 hours of working with the flame lit the whole time. It is really easy to use and alcohol flames are pretty weak so you won't likely start any fires. A torch will make quick work of the curtains if it knocks off the bench.

I use a home made induction sterilizer for my scalpel for regular agar work but if im feeling fancy and break out the biopsy punch I tend to stick to the torch. propane is cheap and efficient but I use butane because its just what I keep around.

Propane torch. Home Depot. Has a knob and a trigger on it, so that's dope. Butane is too spendy.

Keep in mind how the tool operates. Hands and movements are valuable. If it takes a free hand to operate a tool then you loose the use of a hand for that movement. Consider a flame that needs no toggling and remains consistent. If you use a torch, consider clamping it to the table you are working on for safety. They are really easy to knock over.
The type of butane torch that D3 uses is about the most convenient, safest, and best benchtop burner I've seen that won't completely break the bank. They are short and have a wide round bottom so they don't tip over. If you look at flameworking equipment retailers you can find a foot pedal/rocker that you can run gas through to a torch. If you have a permanent or stable lab space and have room for stationary equipment, a torch on a foot pedal would be just divine. Toggling and free hands and numbers of movement. That is the name of the game.

It’s nice because you can turn it on and off one handed, fuel burns clean and doesn’t leave soot and the angle is perfect. It doesn’t waste much fuel because you’re easily able to turn it off and on between each sterilization.

Sondiko butane torch from Amazon works wonders for scalpels! Plus apparently some people torch creme brulee with it too, who knew!
