That is special indeed, have you managed to isolate and reproduce?

Super freakin cool man!
I actually came to this thread to ask the same thing, I remember people trying to cross nats at the start, but I don't recall anybody succeeding.
I wanted to see if anything had changed.

Seem like there has been some success, not qualified but it seems promising.

All my Nats have this irregular curvature to the caps, interesting if anything

also doctor mario on the TC tag! you’ve always been awesome.
I didn’t eat any but I made some capsules of 70% natal and 30% tamps that a couple friends loved.

Guys I thought it's tricky to get nats to fruit properly? Two thirds of the plates that I made grew at least 2 long snakey bois, it even turned out to be about 4g fresh from four plates. Or does the tricky part start when it's spawned to bulk?

How do you prep your capsules? I'm thinking about printing out a filling-thing, but I'd have to get some stuff from the hardware store to put it together and I think the price might be around the price of a complete filling machine thingy.

No not tricky at all. I think what you're referring to is some people grow cultures with a thick overlay where fruiting is not so prolific.
I've done countless nat tubs and not had overlay yet, though I was working from the same set of plates for a while and G2G. Great yields, big beautiful fruits.

Even with the overlay I had, they still fruited within 20 days or so, with no intervention from me at all. PE and some other cube varieties have been much slower and harder to fruit.

Good to know, I was wondering why it was fruiting left and right. Amybe I only saw the reports of people having overlay issues and stuff. Eiother way, thanks for clariafying to both of you!

Solipsis said: I got this very special mutant of natalensis of which I will upload a pic.
Honestly I believe it to be in the pretty special category of mutants that the cube Enigma is in, as well as Omni and a few others I am not recalling the names of right now... it seems they have mutations in crucial non-coding regions. My best guess of Enigma is that it can pretty much only differentiate hyphal knots into stipe tissue or something like that.. they pop up as a lot of 'rods' with no caps on em and when meeting each other they just meld together to form the coral-like structures and otherwise kinda behave a lot like blobs. "Gill tissue" or even "stipe tissue" are probably sort of a collection of multiple kinds of tissues combined - it does seem that there are different strains of Enigma out there and one explanation for that is epigenetics: there may be different emphasis on the expression of subtypes of tissues even if on another level purely in terms of DNA sequence (just basepairs without any details like methylation etc) they are the same strains. I suppose we do not really have the proper terminology to make this distinction?
However this nat apparently can only differentiate into gill tissue, this seems to be the only tissue it is composed of - it appears to be fully functional hymenium with a lot of air..

Was just curious if someone else is familiar with this?
It's called 'Gyrus Pileus' and it is unknown how much work it needs before it is ready to see the light of day. If anybody knows something about it or has seen it before, send me a PM.
I really hope that some research gets/is done on this topic regarding how the development, differentiation and morphogenesis works. I can't exactly check out like the proteomics but I got some pet hypotheses at least about interactions with Enigma.
For that matter I am also pretty curious about the crossings of nats with cubes. Supposedly this has been done? But I think not every strain of cube is ready to do this with every strain of nat. So that is a cool topic as well.
I think I have seen an image of this in Cubes before. Not entirely sure tho.

sounds killer! i’ll have to play around with mixing species next time i get a chance to trip. i’ve heard tamps are pretty visual, i could imagine the synergy being good with those two

I had a PE culture that would do that on blobs in some of the tubs I ran it in, but not always...

I have been reading pages and pages and didnt get much wiser on how to select these. the print was labeled natalensis "zulu". t1 on agar shows quite a lot of rhizomorphic and few tormentose growth. i wonder if someone can enlighten me. very vigorous growth!

You have to test the culture to see what you get.

Some say select rhizo growth, which is good advice, but I say just run em as soon as you’ve got a clean culture, keeping some original genetics via transfers. Fruit, then clone. Any more than that and you’re wasting time isolating cultures that may or may not be what you’re after. To summarize, I’m a fan of sending the widest array of clean genetics to sub at the earliest point possible.

I do them by hand, if I was making a lot I’d definitely get one of the packing tray things though. I just toss the shrooms into a coffee grinder until they’re powder and then pack the caps and tamp it in with a syringe cover.
