Are this happy mushroms? First time grower asking for input
    #27776179 - 05/13/22 09:58 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

This is my first time growing golden teachers and I'd really appreciate some guidance.
Do this mushrooms look happy? if not, would you say that they have too much/little humidity or fresh air?

This looks like bruising to me, am I correct? If so, would you say that this is due to too much misting? or not enough?

I colonized used rye grains in spawn bags and then birthed them into the fruiting chamber in the picture. It has damped perlite at the bottom and the cakes are placed on top of an aluminum foil that has a 1cm layer of pre-soaked vermiculite (that I also placed on top of the cakes). One of them has started to fruit but tho other still shown no signs of pinning.

Thanks in advance a lot for any advice.

The blue is to me what looks like slight bruising.
You might benefit from higher humidity, as it seems your only pins are from the bottom section of verm

I´d make a humidity chamber/water tub out of this.
Place the cakes on a cookie rack/stand,
and fill up 1" of water.

Maybe you misted too aggressively to the cakes as they bruise,
they don´t look dry to me.
Also the big opening short side is too much air exchange,
in combination with misting that often you risk matted surfaces.

Nevertheless the shrooms are looking good.
Not bad for your first time.
Now get conditions on point

Were your spawn bags only grain or was it an all in bag? Looks like only grains so I'll try to help based on that. We normally don't fruit big blocks of just grain like this as we normally mix it up with coir or another substrate like manure etc. The reason being is mushrooms are composed primarily of water and the coir can hold a ton of water for the colony of mycelium to use to grow mushrooms. I see you tried to roll in verm which is definitely better then nothing but probably won't be super helpful in that regard. Pftek works in cake form because it's got the grain ( brown rice flower ) the substrate ( vermiculite ) and the water all in one mixture.

But like they said above me the mushrooms you did get look just dandy and the blue is only bruising. I wouldn't try to change to much up at this point I think but you should definitely be seeing some more pop up, just don't get your hopes up for a huge flush imo.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.
The bags are all grain (rye). I now understand that fruiting them directly (the way I'm doing it) it's far from optimal and that it's hard for the mycelium to get all the water it need to make the mushrooms.

Next time I'll try a different method and mix the rye with something that can hold water.

Following your suggestions I won't make big changes this time.

Just a curiosity, I noticed that some of the mushrooms are of an intense blue inside when I cut them for drying while other are almost white. Does this correlate with the stress? (lack of water, too much water, lack of fresh air, ..)

Thanks again!

Can be a hint on potency,
but also a reaction on physical damage, like splitting them up.
Don´t wait to long with drying,
as the blue will become black from oxidation.
You´ll have gourmet mushroom then
