Temperature for my colonizing grain jars
    #27775555 - 05/13/22 12:32 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

It’s 81 degrees outside, and 77 degrees in my room

Doesn’t seem to be getting much higher than 77-78

Will that be fine? I’m seeing good growth so far

Should I turn a fan on? It cools down when it gets dark, and it’s only supposed to be in the 80s for the next few days

anything in the 59f-86f range is totally acceptable. don’t run a fan or heat mat or anything (that applies to anything in this hobby) you’ll be fine. i wouldn’t worry unless you’re hitting like 90f in your space for a week straight. mid-high 70s is perfect for cubes

Yesssssssss thank you for the reassurance! It’s not seeming to go over 77 so now I’m pretty happy  Should be nice and cozy in there for them

anytime!! you’re chillin. unless your conditions are really extreme, it’s best to be hands off with your tubs. people fuck up a lot by trying to over complicate & micromanage their grows. as you get some experience you learn it’s better to forget about stuff lol

Absolutey, I have 2 contaminated jars, should I bury them in the yard somewhere? I did them in open air but the rest are sexy

yeah, just toss em or throw them in the yard. get an SAB for your future stuff, working in open air is a gamble that you will lose more than you win

Ahead of ya  I just made my very own SAB that I used to do my most recent 5 jars  should come out like gold  what temp do you recommend for fruiting? I’m going straight to fruiting with an unmodified tub because I don’t work so I’m
Home to adjust if I need to all the time

good! the SAB is like the most crucial thing for success in mycology. i would recommend the same temp ranges for fruiting, cubes aren’t too picky. 75f is about perfect but they run just fine at 59f & 86f. lower temps just make growth a bit slower but it’s not harmful at all. most people these days just fruit directly from spawn & don’t distinguish between fruiting & colonizing anymore. i like this mono tub tek a lot, & with some micropore tape over the lower holes it works perfectly for me without having to mist through the first flush. plenty of people love their unmodified tubs too though! it’s mainly about keeping your surface conditions proper while providing as much FAE as you can. you just don’t want the surface to dry out, nor do you wanna choke the tub out of air. usually the myc is pretty vocal when there isn’t enough FAE though, so it’s best to wait until the sub is screaming for more air to start providing it ime, at least if it’s not already getting enough. you’ll learn how to dial stuff in with a few grows under your belt

I strongly suggest anyone without any real experience to refrain from using an unmodified tub. Lots of people like them but lots of people also fail when using one. You really have to pay attention to conditions and make sure they're spot on.

yeah, i tried the unmodified when i first started & definitely didn’t have the knowledge to dial it in. my spawn was pretty subpar too, but yeah the surface was really hard to get right for me. the pasty dialed monos work excellently for me & are a bit easier to dial in imo. shoeboxes/sweaterboxes are a good way to do unmodified tubs

I don’t have anything to do all day everyday, I have nothing to do except dial the conditions in, that’s all I have to do for a job  I can do it, and if it fails, I’ll do it again, and again, and again, and again until I never fail, you have to start somewhere to learn, and this is the method I like and looked into the most, so I’m going with it, like I say if it fails, I’ll just do it all over again  I’ve done PF tek before like 47 times so I don’t think I’ll have to much of a problem with it but if I do I’ll just do it 200 more times

Ive ran thousands of tubs and would choose a modified one everytime unless its a shoebox. Thats just my opinion.

You should try an unmodified tub and a modified tub side by side comparison and work on dialing both in to see which one you like more.

Unmodified tubs are difficult to keep a sufficient supply of fresh air, fanning it is gas exchange at best and pushing unnecessary air towards the surface drying it out.

Hazyhorse is right, pastys version of mono tubs works excellent

Well how do you get FAE in a modified tub if you can’t in an unmodified tub? Do you use a fan or something? I always have a small computer fan on in my room so it creates a nice very very light fresh air current

nooooooo no fans!! you don’t need a fan unless you’re running dozens of tubs in a tiny ass closet or something. you need a serious op before fans become necessary, & most of the time they dry out your tubs & ruin the flush.

FAE happens better in a modified tub because there are holes at different levels that naturally encourage airflow, both at the top of the tub & at sub level. with an unmodified everything has to go in & out the top of the tub & it doesn’t flow as nicely. unmodified mono tubs still totally work for people but i’ve found more consistency using a modified tub w holes strategically placed

Nah, use that time to start more jars and spawn them. You really don't want to be screwing with stuff too much once you've spawned. You'll also learn more by trying different cultures in your environment than you will by trying to manipulate your environment to suit one culture.

:whathesaid:

a lot of times people do too much adjusting & fiddling & it fucks up their grows. it’s better to set & monitor them & only make changes when the sub seems to need them. surface drying out? give it a mist. getting aerial myc or excessive fuzzy feet? give it more FAE. it’ll take a little time for conditions to change. you don’t wanna be opening & closing or adjusting the lid of the tub every 10 minutes

So I searched, but I still don't understand what an unmodified tub is?
Thanks.

edit: it just means we dont cut holes into the box? But that means the water tub tek is unmodified, b ecasue all Im supposed to do is at some point leave a gap with the lid.

Unmodified is a tub that is not modified with holes.
When we talk about unmodded tubs we refer to bod style tubs without holes that use passive fae through the lid crack.

Link attached for reference.

Ok, so water tub is unmodified as I cottoned on to, but thats ok for cakes as a noob I hope? Maybe you guys meant unmodified is bad for a first bulk? But its different for pf-tek cakes? Im just guessing.
