They are indeed. Some of the best colouration I've seen. Very white stipe and bright blue bruising and staining throughout. As they were quite mature, the blue colouring was present all over including the cap and gills.
The entire harvest (10.25g dry) was from just two clumps with extremely thick white spongy mycelium.
Everything about these specimens was just so healthy. Beautiful.

A bunch of very cool finds today - including a few of the thickest stems I'v ever seen on subs. The one pictured was epic with amazing colouring.
Also the little fella with the veil was very cool to see.

Meaty sub. I’d be curious to know what that thing weighs when it’s dried out.

I’d say 1.5g dry. Just enough!

Sadly I'll never know! I sent all the mushrooms home with my friend as she'd been trying to find them for years with no luck - so this forage was for her. The spell is broken and now she's seeing them everywhere!

They just keep coming! I went a bit further up the road from where I was with my friend yesterday and grabbed another 120g.. Including a very similar meaty sub around the same size as the last one - it was 15g wet, so Nitro87 was spot on with their weight estimation
They're all in the dehydrator now. Happy times for only mid-May!

I found a p. allenii last season weighed 1.92 dry. I’m saving it for a special occasion.

Crazy finds everyone! Found my first sea level subs of the season today. Went back to an old sea level spot expecting nothing to find them popping up in the dozens! First few pics are of sea level growth, the rest are some other cool finds from higher altitude today, including the last two, of more in my front yard! Loving this season so far. Was just taking photos and enjoying the hunt today, as I have been so far this season. But I stumbled across a few hunters that were out picking and I think eating at the time. I showed them a few juicy patches I'd stumbled across and had a chat, they were lovely people. If you guys are on here, hope your afternoon went well! Safe travels

Had a great 24hours in the central highlands. Saw a waterfall, did some bush walking, and found some friends along the way

Is it worth having a knock around some lofty parts or Hobart? Or do I need to go south a bit more?

At the moment it doesn't really matter. I saw a bunch up north two weeks ago, a bunch south of Hobart last week, and walking in and around Hobart and the eastern shore I've seen a few this week.

hi everyone Question for the experienced hunters in Tassie: Do you guys have certain spots that you go to, or do you just search around? What's your average success rate of discovery when searching, given the appropriate conditions? Just somewhat of a newbie to the hunting scene

I'm not really sure how you define "success rate", but subs can grow just about anywhere when conditions are right. You're hunting a wild organism, it operates under it's own rules. You can often make educated guesses, and use your noggin - but at the end of the day it's up to nature. The more ground you cover the more likely you are to find what you're looking for. Keep in mind that all "spots" had to be found at some point. So don't be afraid to look in new and unexpected places. Worst case you find nothing and get a walk and fresh air.

They come and go over the years, it seems like you see a lot of them around at a place one particular year, then a few years later none, but there might be others nearby. At least that's my experience.
I suppose the mycelium grows for a few seasons and then runs out of food, unless it's in a good spot.

People definitely have spots. I know because I do! There were many days and weekends trawling different places and environments based on information I'd found online and on this forum before being able to confidently know when to go out and find them everytime though.
Advice: educate yourself on the substrate they like. Do some Google mapping/earthing. wait until there is a heap of rain. 2 or 3 days worth. Your 'spots' will reveal themselves.

Welcome subbykid, you're in for an absolutely amazing experience .
As for your question, I would agree with Tas75 on this matter.
In addition, Magic Mushrooms will not grow in a particular area just because the habitat is the correct type. There are various aspects at play, the more you understand these aspects, the greater your rate of success will be. Another thing to know is that a 'spot/patch' where subs currently grow may only fruit early in a winter season, they might only grow towards the latter part of the season, or sometimes a patch will grow right through the season.
As Funkadelic12 mentioned, education is the best (and less disheartening) tool for success when it comes to finding Magic Mushrooms.
Seek the habitat, not the mushroom
