Pros and cons. Rye vs oats

Im finally getting rye to work for me after all these years and I was wondering about giving oats a shot again. Can anybody experienced with both rye and oats give some pros and cons of each? Could I do the same exact prep? If someone has a log or something of growing them side by side id love to see that as well.

oats gave me bacterial issues compared to rye. and the rye is denser by volume. and i always seem to get better growth on rye vs oats.
with rye i usually get a fail rate of like 3% or less. 5% on a bad run.
failure rate with oats was usually in the 5-10% at minimum.
but thats just me. some ppl love oats and say they dont give them problems.

Why are you considering the switch if you're finally getting rye to work?

Last time i checked rye was like 30 bux for a 40 pound bag and oats were like 12 dollars for a 50 pound bag. Buuuuut I have also moved to a different state since then. I didnt even think prices might be regional it just hadnt occured to me

I've had almost identical experiences to Lotkid. Oats are slower to colonize the substrate, often have unexplained bacteria problems, and have a noticably higher failure rate.
It's worth finding a local source with better pricing. You should be able to find them for under $15 a bag.

Oats were easier to prep for me without bursting grains. But my cultures seem to be more aggressive on rye and colonize a couple days quicker probably bc the grains are a tad bit smaller

I like rye better than oats. Oats are way cheaper, but the only local purchasing option is a 50# bag. Way too much for my needs. Natural Grociers sells 2# bags of rye for $2. Both are easy to prep, but rye is easier to dial in the moisture content IMO.
