How to make your whereabouts online untrackable!!!
    #339889 - 06/13/01 11:08 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, as we all know you're not completely untrackable if you're online. But you sure can give them a run for their money:)

This post is going to be somewhat long, but it will be written in an easy to understand way. I'm going to explain how to "Chain IP Addresses" so that you can move around a bit more freely online.

Whats "IP Chaining"??? Well, whenever you get online you obtain whats called an IP address from your internet provider. (If you have DSL or cable modem, well....thats a whole other post:) ) Anyway, you get online and your ISP gives you a number. This number is your address on the internet. Just like the address for you house or apartment, you get an address whenever you get online. Why do you get an address?? Well, basically so that things don't get too confusing. ISP's purchase these addresses determined on the class of IP address that they decide to purchase.... None the less, regardless of if you're at home or at an internet cafe'. You ALWAYS have an IP address when you get online.

Well....like your house address, people and particular organizations can track you down using your IP address. How do they track you down? VERY EASILY. If I worked for the DEA, I would get your IP address and do a reverse lookup of your address. This would basically tell me the ISP on which you're on. I then call up the ISP (and possibly get a court order for them to release their log records) but I would call them up and have them find our which account was using the IP address that you sent that nasty email, or that very descriptive post on how to grow psychoactive mushrooms!

At that point, its just a matter of coming and picking you up:(

Well, how about we give them a little run for their money!

Try chaining IP addresses together!

Its not a sure fire way of becoming anonymous on the internet. But it will help a bit.

Ok, so what happens if I chain IP addresses???

Like you address at home or on your apartment, chaining IP addresses is like having your mail forwarded from one house to another. If someone sends you a million pounds of mushrooms through the mail you're not going to have them sent directly to your house!!!! You're going to have them forwarded through a few places first.

See the nice thing about the internet is that its global. And you can "forward" yourself through different countries. Countires like Egypt, Agentina, the former Soviet Republic. If you forward your IP address through a variety of countries, it is much harder for a DEA agent to call up the Egyptian Embassy and say "give me your ISP log files".

There are downsides to chaining IP addresses. The biggest downfall is that it can slow up your connection speed. So whenever you go to a site and it seems to load slower, just rememeber that you're going through a few servers worldwide:) Another thing to rememeber is that you want to use "Anonymous Proxy Servers". These are usually servers that reside in public places, colleges, etc.... These servers usually just handle large amounts of internet traffic. They're purpose is to take some of the overall load off of a particular server.

ANYWHO....Lets start chaining

First well need some IP addresses... go here and pick out a few from anonymous servers. - http://proxys4all.cgi.net/

Proxies4all is a good site. But there are many like it out there that simply list IP addresses. Here are a few that I found.

blue.pompano.net:8080

kashi.elec.fuk.kindai.ac.jp:8080

softy.poptel.org.uk:8080

caligula.flash.net:8080

www-cache.mppmu.mpg.de:3128

s2.optonline.net:8080

www.thefourthr-fw.com:8080

q.netunlimited.net:80

cache01.pathcom.com:8080

lino.privacy.fgov.be:80

magusnet.com:many ports

Notice, they all have a name then a " :80" or " :8080". Those numbers are the port addresses. One important thing is that to chain IP addresses, the port numbers MUST be the same. The most common you'll see is 80,8080, and 3128. For my example I've picked:

caligula.flash.net:8080
s2.optonline.net:8080
cache01.pathcom.com:8080

Now the easy part. All you have to do is open your browser, and follow the direction I have below. For me, I use I.E. 5.5

So I go to TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS then I click on the CONNECTIONS tab on the top. Then I hit the button that says LAN SETTINGS. From there you'll see an option that says "Proxy Server" Simply check that box and add your port number (80,8080 or 3128) then your IP addresses.

But how do you put in so many IP addresses??

Simple.....you use a coma ( , ) like this

caligula.flash.net, s2.optonline.net, cache01.pathcom.com

Thats it. After you've done that, hit OK or APPLY and you're off and running. You've officailly chained your IP addresses.

So now when you go to your favorite porn or cultivation site, the IP address that your ISP has given to you will go to caligula.flash.net:8080 then it will bounce off of s2.optonline.net:8080 then it will hit cache01.pathcom.com:8080. So when you do get to that web site. The log files for that website will show the IP addreess of s2.optonline.net (The last proxy server that you connected to).

There's acutally a bunch more to it:) But thats how its done! If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

And by no means is that a "cure-all, save-all" to internet privacy. But it might be useful to you someday.

Below are instructions on how to chain IP address with different browsers.

Hope this helps!

Lana

Hi Alien,
Yeah I forgot Java. As the Scottish would say 'Java is a pain in the arse!" :)

Java is a big security leak... so everyone listen to Alien:) Also, if you're using Internet Explorer go grab the 128 bit encryption pack. It only takes a minutes to download (even on a dial up connection! ) And its free:) You can get it here..

Lana, you mentioned earlier that you could do a reverse trace on an IP address to get more info about the person. Is this something only law enforcements can do, or does anyone have the power to do this? If so, then how is it done? Also, how much info can be gained from this?

Nope,
It's very simple. There's a program called "NeoTrace" that will do a very nice job of tracking people internationally.

Here's a link - http://www.neotrace.com/

NeoTrace Pro by NeoWorx, Inc. delivers a powerful tool for checking information on Internet sites. You can trace any computer on the Internet simply by entering an email, IP address or URL. The display shows you the route between you and the remote site including all intermediate nodes and their registrant information.

It's a nice program, and very simple to use. LEO has better ways of finding you, but this is basically what they do.

Lana,

Something I have never really mastered; mostly due to the oldnness of some of the software, is remailers and nym accounts. I would like to get a nym account and use mixmaster and such to post to newsgroups. Do you know much about that end of things?

I have used the new PGP along with Jack Be Nimble but it was very confusing. If you know any of this to post to newsgroups, please PM me or a new topic here would be awesome.

Thanks Lana

Java might have some security holes, but there is a nice "chaining" java program.
It?s called JAP -- JAVA ANON PROXY and is a really nice tool. Check it out.

OK so I got the neotrace program. I am going to say this next situation is hypothetical just in case. Lets say theres this kid on the net who decides to say that he is going to sell dxm on the internet and rip people off. Not cool. So his website is up and finally somebody falls for his trap and sends him a Money order. Not only does that person never get his dxm, but never get's his money back either. Rather than go to the post office and get into a big legal mix-up, he'd rather find out exactly where he is staying and have a few personal words with him to hopefully get his money back. What I didn't mention before is that this guy also has 2 emails from him, and this particular account also gives the sender's ip address. Both emails are different though. one being from amherst.edu and another from hotmail.com. Both ip addresses are different as well. So this guy who got ripped off runs the hotmail.com ip address. To his surprise, it leads to somewhere in Virginia, kind of close to washington D.C. and it appears this "virginian" is an AOL user! Along with it is a bunch of information about the AOL central server and some other stuff that he doesn't really understand. So he runs the amherst.edu ip address. This one seems to give a little more info. Of course it leads to Amherst college in Mass. But not only does it give the name of the college, it also says the ip address originates from B12 Converse Hall. It also has an email address for administrative contact.

So now my question is: To find out exactly who this person is, and whether he really goes to amherst or what, is it now simply a matter of social engineering? Would this guy simply go up to B12 converse hall and knock on the door, or does that only lead to a room full of computers? This person is guessing the best way to find him is to contact the guy in charge of amherst and explain something away in hopes of getting more info. But could this easily blow his cover? Hmmm, I wonder what a good story would be to get some real info. Oh yeah (Lana) if you need more detailed info such as ip addresses in case you wanna check up on it yourself just send a PM and I will find out (from the guy who got ripped off of course) ;)

so I guess that nobody REALLY knows how someone is tracked down on the internet? Also about the proxies thing: I have found numerous proxy lists all over the internet and no matter what I try none of them seem to work. I still see my IP address in the environment checker. And these are supposedly anonymous proxies. I have been able to seemingly hide myself with the anonymizer though. Am I doing something wrong here?

It's all a waste of time, if they want you they got you. It is global now, all the security agencies from all the countries are working together. They are just more interested in gathering information. One day they might start putting it to use, but for now your just being cataloged. DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU ARE MORE ADVANCED THEN THEY ARE.

Hey Teonan, I agree to some extent that it may very well all be futile and if they want you they have you.. It would make to our govenment alot of sense to keep the public at least a good amount behind technologically in the area of privacy and security. whoknows

I would suggest that it would still hold up fairly well to a regular search. I was just looking at this subject...
altho it isn't completely anonymous (lets face it...in order to do that you'd have to have a program that has some serious fuzzy logic capabilities changing proxies all the freaking time to do that) it's better than nothing.

And if it is just in the cataloging stages, don't hurt to have your first couple of ip's not related to your physical location.

I know that it probably isn't the best idea to underestimate our government's capabilities, but I think one of their biggest deterrent's is people OVERESTIMATING our government. I know Hollywood makes us think that our government is so advanced with all kinds of special units no one hears about, but seriously I think we put too much trust in their abilities. (Hint hint, 9/11, INTELLIGENCE FAILURES, how long did it take them to even catch the DC Sniper or Osama?) One of the show's I think they really need to make instead of COPS is COPS - THE ONE'S THAT GOT AWAY.

Even with all our new sophisticated technology, only 60% of murders are solved (or supposedly solved) in the US. And although I know that our government probably got some nifty online tracking devices that we know nothing about, I can attest that we are still a long way from having a secure internet. Otherwise viruses and spam wouldn't be as rampant as they are now. The problem is the government can't secure everything right now because the infrastructure cost to do so would be too enormous. And although there are huge data mining programs in place, the problem defense agencies are running into is keeping track of it, and being able to use it.

Although I will probably be wooed into developing such research when I graduate, I currently do not have any intentions of doing so. The bottom line is that as long as you keep below the radar, take the proper precautions, and don't have tragically bad luck, you can pretty much do what you please in this country, and no one will know unless you let them know.

PS Encryption will soon allow everyone to do what they damn well please without anyone intercepting, it just needs to catch on more and be beefed up.

All of us on here need not worry. We are not mass-producing shrroms to sell. We grow for the hobby and personal consumption, we dont harm anyone whatsoever, and the feds hate catching pan-fish. They want the big guns, the dealers that supply whole cities.

So, keep it in a close ring of friends and you will only run into local law enforcement, if you bring your stuff outside the house that is...
