barley straw gives of h202
    #2770695 - 06/07/04 01:04 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

So it seems it could make a good substrate, has any
one tried it, or know anymore about the fact that when barley straw
breaks down, it lets of h2o2?

Could help out a few noobies in cult, as a sort of fail safe substrate.

I've ordered a bale, so I'll give it a go. And do a grow log, but I'm just trying to get a idea if anyone else has already tried this.

Never tried it, but don't they use barley straw in ponds to keep them clean? I guess it's from the peroxide.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

From Appendix 5 GGMM 3rd edition:

Barley Straw:
Dry Matter per ct: 90.0
Protein: 3.7
Fat: 1.6
Fiber: 37.7
N-Free Extract: 41.0
Total Minerals: 6.0
Calcium: 0.32
Phsophorous: 0.11
Nitrogen: 0.59
Potassium: 1.33

Wheat Straw:
Dry Matter per ct: 92.5
Protein: 3.9
Fat: 1.5
Fiber: 36.9
N-Free Extract: 41.9
Total Minerals: 8.3
Calcium: 0.21
Phsophorous: 0.07
Nitrogen: 0.62
Potassium: 0.79

Choice quotes from Stamets:

Wheat, Rye, Oat, and Rice straws work the best.

I prefer Wheat [straw].

Wheat straw admits few competitors.

Wheat straw is one of the most forgiving substrates with which to work.

Rye straw is similar to wheat, but coarser. Oat and rice straw are finer... Coarser straws result in a looser substrate... Substrates with lower densities tend to perform poorly.

IOW, while Paul makes no comments concerning Barley Straw it is apparent that he has tried it and still prefers wheat straw.

I'm not shitting on the concept at hand tho. Basically I'm just offering strong reasons why Wheat Straw is the de facto standard around here. Seeing as the "nutrition facts" are so similar I'm suspecting substrate density to be the deciding factor.

Oh, yes, on final choice quote:
...wheat straw has a nearly ideal shaft diameter...

BTW, I have never used anything but wheat straw...

In my area, the only straw I can get is barley straw. All the straw logs and other projects I've done, have been done with barley straw. It works, but it's not contamination resistant. Trich loves the stuff. It does grow good fruits though.

Ah, cool thanks roger. Some ones using it already,
so it certainly works, I've seen your grows
Could this also be helpfull towards your abilaty to grow
on anything lol? like that bra, was it stuffed
with barely straw?

Though of course, trich will still grow on it, as h2o2
evaporates :/ it could be helpfull, though not fool proof.

I'll give it a go, as I've only used wheat straw, I'll run
them against each other just for peace of mind.

I just obtained a bale of straw. not sure if its barley, wheat, or other.... I wouldn't imagine there's an easy way to visually differentiate between the two. or is there?

Any yes, I too have read that Barley straw works great.

Well, wheat straw is yellow, barely straw is more brown.
But to me, the stems are the same size.
