Popcorn kernels tend to expand in the microwave I wonder if that works with Spores as well?

Might be a stupid question, but what about using a clamp instead of a rubber band/hair tie? I've got super old spores, old enough to drive a car kinda old, that I am trying to hydrate.

i was being sarcastic. and i dont think those will work either. ppl have tried the rubber band method and.... myth busted.

Yah, you'd need to apply pressure to the actual solution, like the way that a pressure washer works, or some sort of hyperbaric chamber, and not just squeeze the outside of the container.
But there's still no reason to think that it would make much of a difference in germination terms, and even if it did, it would be a pointless amount of time saved for the effort involved. If you don't have a few weeks to see if old spores will germinate, then you don't have time to grow mushrooms...

Yeah this is quite true.
I remember RR posting a tek once or something with a jar that had a lid rigged up with a one way tyre valve and a pressure meter, kept at 5 or so psi to force hydrate the spores.
On my behalf, it's not the time factor I've got plenty of that, I'm just seeing no signs of life on agar after weeks so I'm getting desperate. It's easy to obtain new spores. It's the canning of a vast library of non-viable spores that's breaking my heart.

Ok, I could see that 5 psi setup maybe helping a bit with really old spores...maybe emulsifiers would help, too? (longbow, 9 months is not very old at all)
I've had pretty good luck quenching my inoculating loop in sterilized water before swiping old prints.

Yep, once you get the rubber bands on tight enough it squeezes the mycelium out of the spore.

Absolutely agreed.
I´m on a tek with this. Once i accidently injected spores to my bike tires. I thought o.k... the coat reads 65psi max, so not bad at all. After a few weeks there were massive shrooms all around the tires. Made a quick bike tour for easy harvest, done.
