Found some, and I'm stuck!
    #2775393 - 06/08/04 05:01 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Ok heres the deal, I'm really interested in psychadellics and I've been anxious to get a hold of some mushrooms. I went and gathered around 100+ shrooms. I dont have a book to identify them, but I'm pretty sure I got some liberties and some other common lawn shrooms, I'm sure none of them actually contain psilocybin, but hey, I want to run some tests to find out.

If they bruise blue, they are most likely psilocybin, but still, they could be something else. I want to know how else I can test them, and also, can anyone identify these?

I live in maryland which is NE America. I have horses and plenty of land and pasture, I found most of these up in my lawn near my pool, and some in my horse field, but none of them were on horse shit.

Help will be appreciated.

those aren't liberty caps, wrong season.

read the  sticky thread , post a description and get some better pictures if you want to find out what they are.

Take a look at  Conocybe lactea , the habitat sounds right and those have the same general appearance, from what I can see anyway :smirk:...

Before you go hunting, know what you are hunting for, and know when it is in season. it makes it alot easier. Also read about making sporeprints, because sproreprints are going to be your key to identifying psilocybian mushrooms.

there is no direct field test for the presence of psiloc(yb)in, you mentioned bluing in your post above, but there are many bolete mushrooms that blue and don't contain any psychoactive alkaloids, some can be toxic.

spore prints are necessary when you want to ID pretty much any mushroom, it helps in narrowing your ID down to a genus.

Boletes have an amazing blue bruising reaction, but can be deadly. For a spore print, cut the stem off of the cap. Place the cap gills down on a piece white paper or mirror. Put jar over to stop spores from blowing away and let sit for 20 min-24 hours.

Those are either what DH said, or possibly Inky Caps. I read in your other thread that your mushrooms sort of liquified.

I might be going out on a limb, but those kind of look like a coprinus species. Either way they are not active.

Thanks for your help guys, I'm going to go on another hunt today.

I live near baltimore in a rural area that is mostly farming, cows live nearby, but its really sketchy to tresspass on their property, I own horses though, and I know only Panaeolus subbalteatus grows on horse manure, but is there any species that I should be looking for in particular? I dont have a book, and i really need to get one, my friend is an expert shroom hunter but he is away for the week, I just want to know what I should be looking for.

I'm basically trying to find some active mushrooms :p

Panaeolus subbalteatus only grow sin horse manure mixed withg compost. it is not usually ever found growing directly from horse manure. Sometimes on rare ocassions one might find them in Cow manure. However the season in America is over for the summer months becasue it gets too hot. Your best bet for them is compost heaps and riding stables int he stable shavings.

Good luck.

Black ink = Coprinus sp. Not active, not worth eating.
