Grain to grain * 1
    #27766735 - 05/06/22 11:21 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

So i have been using WBS for spawn up untill i found out about whole oats (love it). I have alot of bags i would like to  do some g2g with. Problem is i heard from someone that switching grains with g2g is a no go. I dont see why this would be a problem other than the mycelium being used to one and then having to figure out another. Other then that what is the problem?

There isn't a problem.  I see people use millet to rye a lot.

I think you will be fine mixing grains from what I have seen.

I use wbs just because it's easy as hell to prep and I can get it from Walmart on the way home from work.  It grows more mushrooms for me then I will ever be able to eat.

Good luck!

Thanks bro!  Nah I use the Pennington's brand wild bird food.

I have to wash the birdkote off whatever the fuck that is but no worries. I've got a sink.

I usually strain out a good portion of the sunflower seeds but just because they float and my pet outside squirrel likes them the best.

There is no corn.  It has wheat, millet, milo and sunflower seeds iirc.

I soak them for 24 hrs then I Fooman soak them in boiling water that I removed from the eye for approx 7-10 minutes.
Strain for about 2 minutes
Then I lay it out hot to dry on paper towels  mixing from time to time and then I PC them for 3hrs in my instant pot.

Makes magic!

Edit: words are hard

This is the Pennington's you want!  I leave the sunflower seeds in.  I think they may have some benefits if you research it.

Atomsplit- you can treat wbs like millet- just boil some water, then turn it off and throw the wbs in for 45-60 minutes (dependent on how well your pot holds heat ime)

I see no negatives to oats whatsoever. All you have to do is get them wet enough on the inside and then dry enough on the outside. I doubt I will ever use another grain in the future.

Hey, me too. Millet is great for master jars, so many inoculation points.

OP, if mixing grains was a no-no it seems like WBS wouldn’t be a thing…

I personally just leave it all- corn, sunflower seeds, floaters. The mushrooms don’t seem to care as long as it’s rinsed and sterilized.

VT, have you ever tried prepping your WBS with a β€œno-boil” method? I think you could simplify your process if you just did a 12 hour soak then 3 hours in the Instant Pot. Been working great for me and is super low effort.

I use this brand all the time. All I can get around here but I love it. I leave the sunflower seeds with no problems, too. Just pick out an occasional piece of straw.

This is pretty unorthodox in terms of technique from what I've gathered on here, but I've seen people have wild success with P2G transfers. I personally have 18 jars of WBS colonizing now from a P2G experiment. It's probably not recommended, but if you have some PF cakes sitting around and mad grains to be prepped, it's cool to try out IMO. I did some P2G's two days ago and already see growth. So yes, I believe it'd be okay to mix grains; though I could stand corrected.

What's with the hate on oats guys?  I've used it for a few runs and used to use the red and white Walmart bag of WBS but I don't even remember why I switched now.

We still have that WBS around cause we feed it to the birds so I guess I'm considering another switch
I know some love oats, some hate em but what do you guys prefer about WBS?

It's one of the least dense grains by volume, harder to effectively sterilize, tends to have issues with bacteria growth and it's often really dirty.  Since switching from oats to wheat, I shaved over a week off the time from bag inoculation to harvest.

I'm still Team Oats.  They work great, and are cheap af.  50lbs for $15-20.
I've never had an issue with bacterial growth unless I threw suspect agar in- but same goes for wbs and millet.

Oats tend to dry faster than wbs or millet in my experience too.  AND you can just toss them in a sink to let em dry.
Cheap af and easy af.  Win win over here.  Wheats cool too, but expensive to get in my location.  Pretty sure you can get 50 lbs of oats delivered anywhere for under $20 at end of day.

used oats for a year or so then started having bacteria in all my jars. troubleshooting led to the batch of oats i was using, not sterile even after a 3-hour cycle in the PC. i use millet (WBS) for my master jars now and wheat for the spawn jars. both are cleaner and easier to prep than oats.
