No because the rubber seal is air tight, in many cases even if you don’t tighten it down properly. The idea of flipping is metal on metal (Anvil ).

Too much FAE will eventually dry out your grains at the top and cause stalling.

Your best bet I would say is to drill a hole about 6mm or 1/4” in the lid. Fit it rubber seal down and apply a few layers of MP tape.

I think most people start with MP or polyfil and graduate to either syringe filters, adhesive filters or unmodded plastic. Or some combination thereof.

Syringe filters are sucky and not worth the hassle ime. Kind of the same as using unmoded lids, doesn't create much extra xchange. Polyfill vs filters is kinda like analog vs digi. Polyfill is more primitive but will never fail you if done right.

If I still did jars I would not even think twice about it and go right to trusty polyfil lids with no injection ports and shoot thru poly.

Corona masks work great for jars.

I know brown rice is a no no but I tried it anyways. I have a shoebox colonizing now but I was wondering. This bowl seems to have "mostly stalled" or at least slowed down a lot. I was wondering if you guys think I should just open it and maybe put a layer of verm over the top and see if they'll fruit straight out of the bowl? I can feel spongy mycelium all around the inside where I can't see I just don't know how much has actually been colonized. I definitely think I wanna see if they'll fruit straight out of the bowl though. Should I take the plastic off and attempt it or let it keep going? It's been about two weeks or more.

This is what MP tape (pretty good quality stuff too) covered in cube spores which are pretty big for spores looks like up close. You can see how there are pores in MP tape that could allow literally hundreds of spores at a time through the gaps. Apply a little air pressure one way or another and a whole party of organisms from the air are going to come through. MP tape is pretty much only good for macro size particles and one piece over a small hole is like a hangar door for a jumbo jet letting a bunch of hobbits through. Anywhere light is visibly shining through is more than big enough to let spores and bacteria and even microscopic animalia like mites or types of flatworms or nematodes.

Thanks for the info! It was the only tape I had at the moment so I assumed it was better than none. Maybe not I guess. However there are no visible contaminations yet so I'll see what happens.

Hi guys I wanted to PC some liquid culture. I had a bunch of grain jars to PC too...so I PCd them all together for 90mins

The LC culture now has a yellow tint to it. Is this still ok to use or a bad thing?

Thanks

An old topic but i was curious if its still current in relation to tripple vented petri dishes, allowing more air exchange over the standard which still is vented.

My thoughts if more air exchange is it possible for more contamination? or Agar media drying out?

Of course i was wrap dishes in parafilm and into clean BFA container for the spores to colonize the LME agar.

Anyone like to soak oats rather than boil them? I was trying to follow bods oat tek but think i’d rather soak then like a quick 3 minute boil?

I’ve had great shoeboxes but still feel soaking may be consistently better overall… Thoughts?

It works a lot better if it is not over cooked like that. 15 minutes at 15 psi is fine for lc. 90 minutes is burnt.

Hello, what do you think of the water droplets on the bread ? Do you think it's normal compared to the bag which seems to me too short on humidity?

My conditions are as follows:

a Growkit of golden teacher from Freshmushroom not dunked, just put in the fridge for 24 hours, then in the box since 5 days

The room temperature is stable from 20 to 21°, the kit is on a 5W heating mat that I have separated with cardboard + microfiber.

I put a temperature sensor in the box we are at 22.5°,

What do you think, and do you have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance and have a nice day

I never really did get down with bags.. can someone tell me if these are overfilled? If it's ok that the gussets aren't perfectly straight and that the filter patch folds on itself through the accordion fold?

You have sufficient headroom in the bag after pc but you can use less to aid the mix.
I always focus on the bottom pleats being free of grain and neatly folded flat , the filter patch folded flat against itself hasn't been a problem for me in the past, I fold the filter patch down either way and they come out vacuumed everytime.

Thanks dude.

Only managed to fit 4 bags in, they're around 4qt each so I'll definitely make the next lot smaller.

What PC time would you recommend for the 4? If I'm right 2 hours seems to be the general consensus but more for bigger bags?

I see Nate goes 3 hours, 3.5 when he can.

Hmmmm

Gurilla imo if it’s packed tight maybe 3 1/2 hr but loose I would go for 3 hr

@ fecarian fuck them kits if u want something done right do it yourself...
but your surface conditions are extremely wet use a napkin to lightly soak up them puddles and take it out of that cardboard box let it get sum air

@Culliganman360 I understand your point, until now it was complicated to make it myself because I wasn't living alone and to my opinion this technique seems easier to hide.

But I will read about how to make it myself for the future, thanks for the suggestion.

For this one I did what you advised me and I hope water droplet will not come again, maybe my conditions inside are not best..
