I'll keep that in mind. Thank you! Yeah I didn't know they were harder to grow than cubes and I bought them cause they were on sale. I should've checked in on it first but I was excited about the hobby. I was worried about misting right now because it seems to have quite a lot of moisture still. There's lots of condensation on the sides and top of the shoebox. Once I start fanning though Im sure I'll need to mist it. Maybe one of the pros will hop in soon. You've helped a lot though so thank you again.

Just finished growing and dehydrating a batch of regular cubes and a batch of albino cubes. I noticed that the Albinos had a different, lighter and less pungent smell compared to the regular cube batch, which smelled very mushroomy, and pungent. Anyone else notice this difference?

Some do smell different. Most people find that PE and APE varieties smell like hobbit feet.

Anyone here successfully steam dry their grains in brew bags after a simmer rather than laying them out flat?

I don't think it would properly steam dry in that situation and the buried grains would still be very wet.

I don't believe half the people who say they "dry" their grain in their teks. I have a really nice about 4x4ft drying screen and that shit still takes at least half an hour, depending on the grain. I don't get how someone can dry their grain using a collander. I cook em Al dente and load em pretty wet. Works really nice. But i recommend running some tests to find your ideal boiling time. But properly drying on a screen will always be better.

Sandman I figured just as much. Saw somebody doing it on Instagram and got curious. I have 2 loads to run today so maybe I'll test it on one anyways.

I've been out of cult for a long time so I've forgotten a lot of stuff but when I was last doing work I was using a quick prep method for as long as I can remember.

This is my first lot of grains since last year and I'm going back to the soaking method.

When I was doing the soak and boil, I was drying grains overnight laid out on paper towels.

You reckon half an hour is good enough? Maybe closer to that with a drying screen, but I don't want to dry longer than I need to on paper towels. I can't remember why I was drying that long. I think it was wet spots after PC'ing but maybe I just needed to shake and let it dry.

I might build one of those screens soon, only issue is space which is why I've been thinking about folding tables. If I could build a drying screen with fold out legs that'd be awesome.

Just try the Al dente method man. Really great for apartments. I boil wheat for 30 minutes. Wash after boil. Drain, for that you can use the brewing bag. And load wet.

Also, soaking is pretty outdated I think. A super hot tap water soak is pretty good but i feel like most people just do a straight simmer i think. The theory about germinating endospores is really old-school by now.

I use a brewers bag but spread them flat on some tea towels and have 4 mini fans blowing on them overnight. Works brilliantly for oats.

I leave mine on a drying screen over night, works great, but I've only tried oats..

It depends on the grain and the prep I'm doing but if I simmer/boil then I just drain till the drops stop coming out and then toss a few times to let a bunch water vapor off and that's all. Boil, strain, toss, load, pc. If it's millet/milo/birdseed and I have soaked the seeds to hydrate them then I just rinse them off, drain in a sack for a half hour or so, load and PC.

I like to prep grain so it absorbs the last bit of water on the surface vs needing it to "dry" off of them. IMO if you have to dry your grains forever or put a fan on them then they were too saturated to begin with.

For bags it is important to have grain on the dry side of saturated. I use jars and that's not as big of a deal.

I find a lot of trouble with no boil milo not absorbing the excess water and just being really wet. But I only use bags.

Milo is my favorite spawn and I've tried everything you can do for no boil preparation due to scale but it's really fucking me up.

I'm going back to the witches cauldron method and laying the grain on plywood to dry.

I soaked my sorghum overnight like wbs and hung to dry in pillow cases/brewers bags.

Added a bit of gypsum to avoid clumping, never had issues.

I think I used xls-a and 3T bags if I remember correctly.

I know brown rice is a no no but I tried it anyways. I have a shoebox colonizing now but I was wondering. This bowl seems to have "mostly stalled" or at least slowed down a lot. I was wondering if you guys think I should just open it and maybe put a layer of verm over the top and see if they'll fruit straight out of the bowl? I can feel spongy mycelium all around the inside where I can't see I just don't know how much has actually been colonized. I definitely think I wanna see if they'll fruit straight out of the bowl though. Should I take the plastic off and attempt it or let it keep going? It's been about two weeks or more.

You know why it's a no-no? Because we can't see shit and give you any guidance.

Nothing personal and wish you the best.

While I appreciate the honesty Im not asking if it "looks good" or anything. I'm only asking for opinions on if the majority is colonized and it's stalled or slowed down if people think I should try and fruit it now. Thanks for your input though, I do appreciate it. I just didn't have what I needed at first so I noc'd up some brown rice and then brf cakes. This is just a first timers test run with 90 second rice.

Just doing up some new jars, brings up a question...

I see some folks turn mason jar lid upside down (seal up)

why would I want or not want to do this?

Going to try Bod's Oat tek, thanks Bod great thread.

It doesn’t create a perfect seal and therefore provides a bit of FAE. I’ve not tried it personally. I use unmodded plastic lids and back them off 1/4 of a turn.

I would think loose top would have same affect, so if I am using micropore for filter and if I either use "loose" or "flipped" lid and more air exchange would create  faster or better spawn without contam danger?
