Mycelium (glucose?)
    #2775877 - 06/08/04 10:02 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I'm starting to experiment with making mycelium. I myself am a diabetic, and know that dextrose is just a complex sugar made from a simple sugar called glucose. So i've started incubating a jar using glucose, and I was wondering if I was right in using the glucose? Is this going to colonize? or did I waste my time and I should go buy dextrose?

PS. Which of the 2 would work better?

Thanks in advance.

Dextrose is dextrorotary glucose.

Glucose is fine, don't sweat it.   Just about any simple carbohydrate is fine for what you're doing.  I don't imagine that it would change the response of the myc.

Thanks, I appreciate it.  I'm new to mushroom cultivation, but I seem to be catching on fairly quickly, I hope  :stoned:

To clarify on the responses (they are correct) dextrose is just the d- isomer of glucose, as opposed to the d- and l- isomers. It's practically the same (however fungi do seem to prefer the d- isomer, or dextrose.) If you are trying a liquid culture to make more syringes you should be fine, but simple sugars aren't needed (or wanted) if you're trying to grow a jar as a cake or whatever.

I'm sorry, I must not have been thinking out what I was typing right. I meant to say I'm starting to grow liquid mycelium in a jar, and I was wondering if glucose would work instead of dextrose.

Which made sense to me because this way the mycelium wouldnt have to break down the dextrose into a simple sugar, and would therefor colonate the liquid jar faster. Or am I wrong about that?

Complex carbohydrates are better because the mycelium must work harder to break them down. It promotes healthy, agressive mycelium. Making a liquid inoculant you shouldn't have any problems. Using more complex carbohydrates is usally recommended in agar culture, to prevent strain degradation over generations of transfers.

You plan sounds fine to me, the mycelium will grow and should be healthy. But I can recommend that you add a bit of substrate extract as well. For example: If you are using WBS, boil some for a bit and use a little of the broth in your liquid culture. Once you shoot up those WBS jars the mycelium won't need to adjust to the new substrate.
