Question to rack your brain
    #2775819 - 06/08/04 09:40 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

If it were scientifically determined that watching television caused cancer, do you think you'd hear it reported on the six o'clock TV news?

That could hurt ratings.

of course you would, thats a no-brainer. Everyone dying from cancer would completely destroy the economy and send every nation with wide-spread television use into the depths of chaos.

I was trying to make a point about our media. They won't report something if it's not in their interest. Therefore, you can't rely on media for the truth. Most people in the S&P forum probably already know that, but try asking this question to an average joe you meet on the street.

MH -
Just a quick question about your signature. I saw it emanate from a character named 'Dope Rider,' in National Lampoon Magazine in the mid 70's. Where, perchance did you discover it?

I don't know the true origin of the saying but I picked it up from another forum where it was credited to R. Lewis, whoever that is.

"They won't report something if it's not in their interest. Therefore, you can't rely on media for the truth."

why dont you give us some examples of "truths" that werent reported in the "media" media = books, magazines, newspapers, television, films, radio, internet.

no aliens or religious hokey-pokey please.

Let us not forget that the "media" is not a united evil force, but rather a social institution that is home to millions of diverse individuals.

LOL! You're kidding, right? There are so many I could think of but off the top of my head:

- The "heroic rescue" of Jessica Lynch in Iraq. There was no rescue, nor was it heroic.
- Lack of coverage of third party candidates for US presidency. Months of coverage for the Democrat and Republican candidates but only a few hours at best for others.

By the way I'm referring to mainstream media such as CNN, Fox, ABC, et al. Of course these topics are reported in less mainstream sources, otherwise no one would know about them.

..........okay then.....thats not "the media" thats the American conglomorate corporate media. Big difference. And there are many mainstream sources around the globe that report otherwise; The Guardian, The Independent, CBC, Al-Jazeera, etc etc etc.

Positronius,

not that i like spreading the mania of sensationalist whistle-blowing on obvious misinformation a la Michael Moore style, but for what it's worth, if you want some concrete examples of media "truths" that have in time come to be proven otherwise, you might want to put on your paranoid hat and read anything by Russ Kick, like:

"Everything You Know Is Wrong" (see what i mean about sensationalist?)

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...ks&n=507846

there's a ton of links to the whole subgenre of books which debunk media myths and hysteria. for instance:

-You Are Being Lied To by Russ Kick
-50 Things You're Not Supposed to Know by Russ Kick
-Abuse Your Illusions : The Disinformation Guide To Media Mirages And Establishment Lies by Russ Kick
-Book of Lies : The Disinformation Guide to Magick and the Occult by Richard Metzger
-The Seventy Greatest Conspiracies of All Time: History's Biggest Mysteries, Coverups, and Cabals by Jonathan Vankin, John Whalen
-Disinformation: The Interviews. by Richard Metzger

i haven't read much of this myself because, as i say, i don't much care for this particular brand of "OMG YOU ARE BEING LIED TO! (but of course, i'm telling the truth so listen to me!!!" counter-hysteria. BUUUT from the brief bits i've glanced through, it looks as though most of it is well-researched and footnoted, if nothing else.
