Depends on the grain. Good rye or wheat, and I just hard boil till it’s done and dry. For WBS, I soak overnight, bring to boil, then dry.

I've used cracs no prep millet and it works great for me. Millet is a little pricey by me though so I go with wheat. I do rinse out about 3 times before I boil it. I've tried soaking before boil but it didn't seem to make much of a difference so I just skip it now. I rinse, boil, spread out on screen to dry once it's hydrated fully, let dry for 20-40 minutes depending on how thick it's spread out, then load my jars. I've used the same prep in bags before but I don't need to run bags as I'm pretty small time.

I have only ever used wbs but I do what Mystic does.
Soak overnight, then I bring water to a boil on the stove then remove from the eye and fooman soak it in the hot water for about 10 minutes. Lay it out on paper towels to dry, load in quart jars,& pc.
It has always been perfect so far!

If millet for Crack's tek isn't available, I go for whole oats. The price is right, around $20 for 50 pounds.
Boil oats for 30 min (no pre-soak or rinse required), strain, spread over cardboard and fan dry for about an hour. Cook 90 min at 17psi with quart jars.

It's just dirtier and has some random debris in it that I'd rather take out. Depending on where you get the grain ( as in which farm/company made it ) you could skip rinsing if it's clean enough.

I've been doing 1:2 WBS:wheat. Just boil, no rinse. I wouldn't say my grains are clean... But I've never seen dirty grains I guess... I figure if it's good enough for cattle it's good enough for shrooms ha.
I make sure to really mix it after straining while its hot tho, while it's producing steam. The steam carries alot of moisture off the surface. Careful tho if it's cold out you may just be seeing water vapor, not steam. If you can hold the grain and ita not hot like 200F, then it's probably not producing much steam, and at that point I bag it up warm. Or jar it up. I even turn on my PC after my grains are halfway apcked to get it warmed up. And I add warm water to my PC, between that and bagging a bit warmer it gets up to temp so much quicker.
Really if your grains are slightly wet to touch their going to be saturated with steam in the PC anyway and alot of that mositure will reabsor throughout colonization or even at spawn when mixed.
Bags all day. But I don't have a dishwasher... If you growing for a hobby ide stick with jars for sure.

In my experience with wheat and rye, one full quart jar will expand enough to make 2 quart jars around over 3/4 full. So for 4 myco-quarts I prep 2 full quarts of dry grains.

I prefer popcorn since it’s easy to find and mostly sterile

I tried it a couple of times because I was too busy to go to the feed store, not going to use it again much more expensive and takes a lot of time to hydrate but yeah you can find it basically anywhere so it have that going for it

What do you mean mostly sterile? You still have to run it through a PC cycle to sterilize it, like any other grain. IME popcorn is hard to work with and less effective than most other suitable grains.
I prefer rye and wheat, but wild bird seed is cheap and really easy to find. The small grains and easy of hydration make it better than popcorn, at least in my experience.
