Wall.E said: Where's the trip report smalltalk? I've been following this thread for a long time and yet to recall anyone actually eating it and reporting back with a trip report. Maybe I'm wrong, but if someone said "Ate overlay, about 1-3x the potency of cubes" then I don't care and overlooked it. I want to know if the trip is the same as natalensis fruits.
Sorry, I forgot to post it.
I took a whole bunch of overlay from a shoebox size tub, but didn't weigh it, and made a tea.
Split between two people, the effects were more than a micro dose but too faint to tell any difference between cubes and Nat overlay tea.

Once i get my ass around to use the miraculix tests i have lying around, i will do a test on nat overlay too

I wanted to post an update here to show a clone culture tub of Psilocybe natalensis I am growing using a mix of 5 parts corncob pellet to 3 parts coir, with 10% CaCO3 added by dry weight of substrate, plus a 2cm top layer of all coir.
So far it's growing out clean and beautifully, with no major overlay so far. Fruits are forming. Like other tubs of nats I've grown, lots of side pins are forming, too.

More info in my corncob trial journal linked in my sig.

Not big by cube standards, but this third flush fruit is probably my heaviest nat so far.

I feel like I may have more evidence that spaghetti pheno is triggered by low FAE.
I cloned a fruit from this tub from a cluster:

That unmodded monotub had a lot of FAE: I put the lid on crooked so there were four gaps at the top, and I fanned twice a day or more. No spaghetti in the tub: Fruits grew straight and tall, and there was very little overlay.
The clone I grew out in a tub without doing my extra FAE steps described above, and in a tub that doesn't have gaps from where the latches sit. Still had very little overlay, but lots of spaghetti:

This is the 5:3 corncob:coir tub, and while nutrition may also be a factor for spaghetti pheno, that first tub was spawned 1:3 and the corncob tub spawned at 1:5. I don't think corncob would be more nutritious than the extra millet.
Something to chew on, anyway. Seems like FAE is responsible, and that overlay doesn't or doesn't always contribute to spaghetti appearing.

So, I started over from spore just for fun and the mycelium behaves like I have never seen it before with nats nor with cubes... The surface just colonized and it looks this might turn into blob city or something like that. I hope you can see what I mean looking at this picture. The culture I used to work with never did something like that. Anyone familiar with this sight?

I’ve had a few look like that. Looks like you and the overlay are about to become great friends
That’s part of the fun in running these imo. Every time I go back to spore, something different comes out

Dang, I worked with a blob free culture for a looong time.
Anyway, if it turns blobby on me I will thoroughly bioassay these and report back, lol.

I have a Nat shoebox that I spawned on 04/22. It is going nuts, with mycelium climbing up the walls of the tub. Easily outran the Cambodian gold cubes spawned on the same day. I assume this is the beginning of overlay? That’s ok with me. I was hoping for it to behave differently than cubes, and also want to sample the overlay. Thanks again, Mojave, for the genetics. You’re awesome.

Awesome progress, Mystic! It'll likely fluff up a bit more, but the overlay I have encountered is quite tame compared to what some here have experienced. YMMV of course, especially with this species lol

Yeah, I’ve been loving the variation I have seen in this thread, from twisty green snakes to short fat cubensis looking phenos. Excited to clone hunt and play around with this species.

I wanted to post some interesting info on the corncob:coir mix with natalensis. I went through my notes and pulled some stats of the tubs I've run of the species.
It took slightly longer for the corncob:coir mix to fruit. The average for the five previous tubs (all coir) was 25.8 days, and the corncob:coir tub took 29 days. However, this is the only time I've grown this clone, so it could just as easily be slower genetics.
Tub 1 (MS, all coir 1:3): spawn 29 Dec, harvest 26 Jan = 28 days Tub 2 (MS, all coir 1:5): spawn 25 Jan, harvest 21 Feb = 27 days Tub 3 (MS, all coir, 1:5): spawn 8 Feb, harvest 6 Mar = 26 days Tub 4 (MS, all coir, 1:5): spawn 10 Mar, harvest 2 Apr = 23 days Tub 5 (Clone, all coir, 1:5): spawn 15 Mar, harvest 9 Apr = 25 days Tub 6 (Clone, 5:3 corncob:coir, 1:5): spawn 31 Mar, harvest 29 Apr = 29 days
Previous first and second flush yields of the natalensis tubs are below; occasionally, I keep tubs around for third flushes, the most impressive of which was the first tub, but it had an extra jar of grain, and on a per jar of grain basis, it did not result in a significantly better yield. I was curious to see if the corncob:coir mix is nutritious enough to make a difference.
Total yields:
Tub 1: 49g, 22g = 71g Tub 2: 28g, 21.2g = 49.2g Tub 3: 30g, 35.2g = 65.2g Tub 4: 30.3g, 30g = 60.3g Tub 5: 56g, 28g = 84g Tub 6: 78.5g, TBD
The corncob may be making a big difference. The first flush of the corncob tub was 2x the average first flush yield and 1.4x over the other clone tub. It yielded more in the first flush than all of the MS tubs did in their first two flushes.
I wouldn't call this conclusive by any means. It's the only tub I've run of this clone and this mix, and it's entirely possible the myc "blew its load" the first flush, and the second flush will be very small. But it was an interesting result that encourages me to explore this mix with more tubs.

Even if it isn’t the substrate, cultures that put out the whole yield the first flush are really nice.

True, it's nice to free up a tub. I just wish that spaghetti didn't take as long to harvest and laid better in the dehydrator. I'll be going back to increasing FAE during fruiting with the hope of getting straighter, sturdier fruits with this clone (if the potency is decent and I want to keep growing it).

So a while back i cloned a fat little ape looking natalensis.
Haven’t run it yet but the myc is really weird. I transferred a couple times thinking it was dirty but I think this is just how it is. Put it to grain yesterday.

I'd agree. I forgot my tubs after rotating out of my Panaeolus FC tent and had sealed but modded monos.
Popped lids and what was a first flush of mostly straight but ruffled Nats were all snakes running the substrate
3rd flush back in tent yesterday and growing huge straight chonks
All clone tubs
Other potential variable is light. Tent is nice and regular. Tub consolidation room is stacked and ambient

Good confirmation! That’s why I never had snakes even I had few very tall specimen as I fruited them in a FC with Panaeolus and other species with high need for FAE as tampanensis & mexicana..
