Newbie questions (and a pretty picture)
    #27756899 - 04/29/22 06:27 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

First the pretty picture.. I've really been enjoying how differently each cake fruits. This is the third cake to mature and I think it looks like a little mushroom village.

There were a lot of aborts on this cake. Twenty mushrooms and forty aborts. The bases of the stems also seemed more "fluffy" than pictures I've seen of other people's grows. Here are a couple closeups of the fuzzy-fluffy growth - does that look normal? If it's not normal, might it have something to do with why there were so many aborts? And lastly, is the fluffy growth a clue for some environmental tweak that I should make?

And... speaking of visual clues...
What makes these smoky swirls on the caps? Some of my mushrooms have it and some don't. Is it a clue about needing to change something in the growing environment?

Thank you for any comments/suggestions you might have. This community is awesome!

The fuzzy growth at the base is commonly referred to as “fuzzy feet”. It’s a sign of needing more FAE in my experience. I can’t speak on the abort rate or caps because I couldn’t tell you what would be responsible for them, though I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the look of the cap to be honest.

"Fuzzy feet" describes it exactly!  *grin*
OK - more fresh air. Can do.

To add, the fuzz is just mycelium and is totally safe, just not “optimal”.

The smoky swirls are spores.

That's what I thought when I'd seen these swirls in other people's pictures, but the cap in the picture had no upstairs neighbors - no chance of spores. It's definitely a change in pigmentation, and it only happens with some of the caps. Got me curious...

Thanks for the clarification, Spooks. It's not some skanky contamination, it's just the mushroom equivalent of gasping for air.

They back draft, trust me it is spores. It wipes off right?

I hadn't considered backdraft of spores onto its own cap..  Huh...
That cap is well on its way to cracker-dry, but I'll try wiping off spores next time I see a swirly shadow on a cap.

I’ve read an article on this somewhere, mushrooms create their own “mini” currents through the evaporation of water off the cap as well as its shape and …something something hot air rises, causing the spores to spiral over the top. Also an indicator of air flow if you’re trying to dial tubs or your FC

Yep! That was totally spores on the cap!
I checked the next mushroom to exhibit the same behavior - the dark smudges wiped right off.

So cool...

I love the patterns they make when that happens. I got my TW variety by germinating cap spores from a bought baggie.

Is this pin too small to clone? Would you wait till it’s bigger?

Not quite sure why you're posting in this thread?
You'll probably get more traction if you start your own thread with a title that has something to do with your agar pins instead of piggybacking on my boring newbie questions.

Ask in a new thread - I want to see the answer!

I've taken pin clones smaller, those would work fine. Sterilize some tweezers and you're good to go. I'd like to know how you got that spore print on the agar like that

Sorry Mollee to continue on your thread :crankey:

That is great you were able to get spores from a purchased bag. I am going to try that next time I come across some. Best of luck to you

Heh!  All good..
I just wasn't seeing anyone responding to Carebear's question, and figured they'd have better luck asking anew. You're welcome to hang out on "my" thread any time - we're all mushroom family here!
