Living in the government woods.

You know, the U.S. government ownes a lot of land. We got National forrests, often there are areas beside major roads that are government owned, as well as in some areas where large power lines go through.
There should be some cheap ass government housing there. No electricity or anything, just a modern day manufactured "hut" that would cost about $2000 each to manufacture. The tenant would assemble it themselves, or at least they should be designed so that one person could assemble a unit in a day or two.
Each unit would include:
A gas/wood stove/oven/heater
A water tank
Approximately 200 square feet of space
An outhouse
Parking
Access to a forrest community would be limited to one point per community in most communities. Transportation within the community would be public and would probably be rail based. There would be no vehicle roads, but there may be footpaths from unit to unit.
The public transit system would be computer controlled and probably electric. The main methods of movement from place to place within the community will be walking, and a 4-5 horesepower electric motor attatched to the rail with a seat on it. It will move autonymously at speeds of up to 15 MPH. It will be able to pull small loads on carts also attatched to the rail system.
You could call a railbike from your living unit (heretofore to be known as "home"), and it would deliver itself to you. There would be a call point near the rail at every resdence. Items could even be delivered by the rail system, water and fuel being the main two.
Each community would have a central hub at the entrance that would provide many community services including public showers, restrooms, groceries, television, internet access, mail, storage...
Showers, storage and bathrooms would be free, but not the groceries. (food stamps would be accepted)
Not sure about television and internet.
Each tenant would be funded with a government subsidized loan which they could pay back with cash, or labor. The housing unit is portable, and will of course retain some of it's value for some time. when someone moved out, they could cash in on the remaining value of the unit to help pay of any remaining debt that might remain. This means that the user would pay no more in housing than the depreciation on the initial investment.
My wildly half assed estimate is that a human being could live on $50 a week with no cost to the taxpayer.
Housing would essentially be free. $2000 worth of housing for what would be approximately 10 years use ($4 a week) A healthy diet can be bought for $20 a week. $26 worth of gas will go a long way in an $800 motorcycle.

There would be limitations as to how much of a "footprint" a person could make on their allotted area. Almost everything going into the forrest would be coming out and most of it would be recycled. Most of what came in and didn't come out would be in the outhouses. There would be no running water except at the main hub where the community showers are.
Residents would be educated as to what could be cleared, and what had to be left alone.
There is, in fact, a surplus of underbrush and small trees in America's forrests. most of them need to be thinned to allow more natural growth. The intervention of Americans in the fire cleansing process of out forrests has left them choked with tinder just waiting to fuel the next big forrest fire.
In natural forests there are very few massive fires like we see today.

People are not buying the land. The land stays in the ownership of the government. It it essentially already paid for.
This would be designed to break even, not make money. Any gains made would be spent on the program. There would be no profits.

It's a good idea. I think they'll eventually have to resort to this in the future.

I'm surprised no one here sees anything wrong with sequestering people in government run camps...

You mean like in a housing project?
Living there would be completely voluntary. You pay $2000 (or take on $2000 worth of debt) and in exchange you can live in any unoccupied dwelling in the system, or if you wish you can live somewhere else. You can buy a home and still keep your house and access. You won't lose your access if you move out of the system. As a matter of fact you can sell your membership and your equipment to someone else.
I don't know if it's legal to let people live in metal tents on your property or not.
What kinds of laws would apply to someone selling or renting someone a shack that has no water, or power other than what you carry in, but it does have cable and internet and where people poop into a hole in the ground?

That place looks pretty funky.
I may be way off the mark, but my hunch is it'll take a little while yet till mainstream government thinking comes around to promoting anything like this though. It smacks too much of hippidom and freedom of ideas, there's a lot of independence and little reliance on big corporate infrasturucture.
The inevitable shift is on it's way though.
