a few questions about grains...
    #2775407 - 06/08/04 07:08 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

How long do grain jars last after sterilizing in a pc? how do you tell if a wbs jar is completely done colonizing...is it when the cake bounces around in the jar without breaking when it is shaken?

try to use them within 2 days. You can see the white growth is everywhere and there are no bars patches of grain. You might want to give it an extra day or two to get strong growth before breraking it up with a spoon before using it.

>"How long do grain jars last after sterilizing in a pc?"

<I don't waste anytime waiting to see how long they will last.I innoculate as soon as they cool down, usually overnight,so I can't answer that for you.I can assume that I would not want to wait any longer than 3 day's because you want the mycelium to colonise the jars very quickly before contams have a chance to get a grip.

>"how do you tell if a wbs jar is completely done colonizing"

<When they look like this VVVV

the jars on the left are Millet VVV

If you shake them after being fully colonised to get them out they should resemble this VVV

Sorry about the pics!

Hope that helps

if it's been sterlized then it wouldn't get comtamination

i've heard of people holding onto jars for a month, but in time they will for sure dry out even in a sealed jar.

although i agree with doc34 on this part why wait that long there is a dam good reason i made them jars.right hell ya  :mushroom2:

I have kept sterilized jars around(BRF)uninnoculated for up to 3 weeks before bacteria got them,or should I say the smell emmitting from them made me dispose of the foul odor.I assume it was a contam?
I didn't leave them their on purpose,I forgot them, untill I sniffed this funky aroma coming from my kitchen cabinet, lol.

If a jar is sealed and sterilised it would be 'canned',therefore canned goods will keep for up to a year and be edible. They may keep longer, and I have to admit,I have eaten foods that were canned and were older than one year, but, there is alway's this thought in the back of my mind about getting food poisoning, which I have had, once! That is the sickest I have ever been in my life people-explosions from both ends of my body simeltaniously, profuse sweating, cold clammy skin, cramps,I didn't even know who I was,but I do know I wanted to die-seaking relief!

You guy's/gal's can wait all you want, but when my jars cool down, they get spored!

Screw that waiting to get sick crap!

I have left jars for weeks before innoculating after pcing....as long as your sterlization was done properly they will keep for a while

EDIT: the only problem I've ever had concerning innoculation is reinnoculating jars that didn't take from the first innoc...almost always I end up with a bacteria contam from this even if the syringe I used for both innocs was good

WBS, when fully colonized, will brake up pretty easily with a few good knocks with the butt of your fist. If it doesn't then your grain may be too wet.
