if you are working with grain & LC, you should get into agar. you need a PC for grains anyways & agar is an excellent way to guarantee cultures are clean for LCs, plus an excellent way to take clones & expand cultures. itโ€™s not difficult at all & is definitely the best way to step up your game

Ya if you're gonna do LC you've gotta use agar. Spores to LC can work but it's probably like a 1 in 10 success rate where if you use agar and get comfortable you'll be at 95%+ success. Best way to bulk is grains to tubs for sure imo. I've seen sandman do bulk brf bags that work pretty damn good but I think grains are more commonly used.

What other non-active spores with medicinal benefits should I look into for growing on rye grain? Lions mane chaga cordyceps etc? Anything I should do differently? Any for food? Would it be profitable to grow (non-active, medicinal, culinary etc) for the farmers market?

I decided to check on my tubs today, and 2 of them have a little bit of a funky smell to them.. i think my substrate is too wet..I already knew I mite have issues with these 2 because the spawn didn't recover as quickly as my other jars after the last shake (they did recover, but it took like 5 days).. should I try and see if they will still give me a flush, or should I cut my losses? Maybe bury them outside and see if anything happens?

Expanded to shoeboxes about 6-7 days ago.

So I would like some extra eyes on my first tubs in years. Slow growth. I have a thread here

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27714122

but posting here as well because of visibility

Amazon Tubs

Let's start with my Amazon tubs. The jars had metabolities, but smelled clean. I had 4 of them, so I prepared 1 brick of coir (with no vermiculite, just coir) and made it into 3 tubs total, one of them having half of the brick and 2qts, while the others two just 1qt.

Pretty sure I got field capacity. They have been pretty stalled. Temps could be higher (thanks Canada) and it was the first time in a while I did a top layer of coir.

ps: i know I screwed up the leveling of substrate as well :frown:

Amazon A & B

These two, I am not too worried with. Seems like they just need time to get past the "casing"

Amazon C is the bigger one that had 2qt. The growth from the sides is not very expansive (forgot pic of that), and I am pretty sure I put too much coir, especially for the top layer.

Husky Tubs

My ol reliable mystery strain I have been cultivating for years. These tubs were newer and I am less worried about them. Still, stronger/faster/fuller colonization would be nice.

Husky A

Husky B

Those two were made with a half brick (eco earth with vermiculite) and 2Qts each. I also used a top layer of coir, which I guess I am not huge on.

Husky C

This one has 4Qts, but just coir because I forgot verm once again. this looks more like my old tubs, and I am confident with it (at least in comparison). I did a tiny top layer for this one, although some grains still poked out

So, do these seem like they might pickup?

From now on I think I will only do 5 or 6 Qts per tub, I have had nice mycelial cakes in the past, but this huge batch of Coir that I got (like 30 bricks of Eco Earth) maybe has been harder to colonize. I do check for field capacity and the squeeze test seemed to work fine. Besides switching brands, any other recommendations for better tub colonization?

As of now, all of the tubs are unmodded. I am trying dollarama containers cause cheap and nice size for half-monos.

You might get some fruits from those tubs but it's not likely. They are struggling with bacteria. The metabolites in the jars were a sign that they were already struggling with some kind of invader. That last tub looks like it will fruit just fine.

Personally I'd just toss all the bacterial tubs and keep the last one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Let me know if you need a print to work with.

Crap, I guess lesson learned there and I wont trust a bit of metabolites in the future.

I did screw up the pics there. I agree that the Amazon stuff is likely a lost cause. Should I try spawning them outside? dig a hole in soil and hope for something?

What about the Husky tubs? I agree the 4qt one is fine.

Do those two look bacterial as well?

Agreed :frown: I think ill dig a grave for the Amazon, try spawning the Husky at least. I guess bacterial spawn can't contaminate a grow room, so either they are sucky tubs and I get a few fruits or they also get tossed later on.

Considering the room is a bit cold, should I turn up the heat so its at least 20C?

The most likely culprit would be bacteria hidden in the agar plate right? Or a screw up in the SAB? I am guessing mixing coir is not a contamination vector. I did just use my hands, washed. Pretty sure it's the grain or agar.

I'm going to inspect my new jars and hope that they turn out right.

Yeah those tubs aren't going to produce any fruits.

Shoebox seems to have stalled after full colonization. Day 4 no change. I have been misting, then leaving the lid cracked until the droplets evaporate, then misting again.

Any other recommendations?

Leave it alone. Sounds like you could be misting too much

nothing looks concerning in that tub to me. just keep up your surface conditions & let it ride. if you notice itโ€™s climbing up the walls more or are getting aerial myc, give it more FAE. be patient, youโ€™ll see some knots soon

They don't seem to be colonizing very well considering how old they are. You might get something out of them but I wouldn't count on it.
