so what do i do crumble the cakes up into dry vermiculite or what and what is a spray sheild? SOrry if i sound dumb but im new

no you don't sound dumb we all had to start out fresh just like you, no I wouldn't crumble the cakes this would just make to mycelin expelle for energy. I tell you what go to this web page and you learn everything you need to know about this type of casing and what a spray shield is. but real fast to case with verm just fill a jar cap with verm soak it with water then drain it and place the cake right on top of that. A spray shield is a piece of plexie glass cut to fit your tank with a little space on both sides to let the mist flow around to where the cakes are sitting, this shield helps to break down the water to a vary fine mist so it won't drown the cakes. go to http://www.fanaticus.com here you'll find a wealth of info and if you do it like PF say's you should have no problems at all. trust me. this tek is almost fool proof and by far the easiest. And I don't care what anybody says it's the best for anybody who is just starting out.

another thing you could try would be perlite. 2 inches in the tank 1/2 of water. I'm trying this for the first time I included a pic to give ya an idea. you can buy perlite at any garden shop are wal-mart etc.

I'm not trying to step on your toes wiggy, but crumbling the cakes does absolutely no harm to the mycelium despite what you've been told in the past. Crumbling (or cutting) is the most efficient method when using PF style cakes.

I wouldn't recommend attempting to use dung on your first try, just case using one of the usual methods.

A spray shield isn't necessary, either. The mist from your sprayer isn't going to harm the mycelium or the casing. If you want to use one, go right ahead; But in my opinion, it's unnecessary and is much more trouble than its worth.

I always wondered about the spray shield and all that, I don't use one, plus I just got a shitake block from FP, and I spray it directly three times a day according to directions. Is cubie mycellium much more sensitive or what?

That's the funny thing, it really isn't. But Shiitake mycelium has the luxury of living inside of that wood-block, so I can imagine it would take more of a beating (if you want to call spraying beating).

Hippie disproved that dumb rumor that water will hurt your cakes by dunking the damn thing! I love that, mainly because it exposes the people who are just following what they've been told compared to those who experiment, research, etc.

It's true that water droplets can make contaminants more likely in some stages of culture, but that's mainly when using agar. I dunno, I'm rambling.
