Looks like you found morels! If so, then yes they are edible. Wait for a TI though

get a pick from under the cap cut in half aswell. the one looks like false morel. usually morels have isolated pockets in the fruit body vs just wiggly lines.

Looks like a Verpa so to me. Compare to something like Verpa bohemica maybe.

Verpa bohemica.
The easiest way to distinguish them from morels is to cut them in half vertically. Verpa caps will be attached at the top of the stem, like most mushrooms. Half-free Morels will be attached to the stem about halfway down the cap, and the rest of the morels will be attached at (or very near to) the base of the cap to the stem.
Also, morels are hollow, but Verpa have cottony stuff inside, at least when they're young. When mature the cottony stuff can disappear.
As far as edibility, there are some differing ideas. I would recommend *not* eating them.
Generally they like the same sort of conditions as morels but fruit earlier, so try going back in a week or three and check for morels then.
-------------------- Happy mushrooming!

No differing ideas, absolutely edible, and of great taste. I eat them all the time. People on Balkans eat them all the time, for centuries. Should be boiled, water drained, then prepared in any way. Eat in moderation if you're scared for whatever reason.

many books list as not edible i think is his point. but yes many people eat them and treat them specially to prevent any stomach issues/poisoning. I dont kno about the specific cases but are documentations of issues eating them esp without proper prep. Perhaps its like paralysis with wood lovers, def doesn't happen all the time but certainly DOES happen, and may bea. regional/substrate/strain(producing slightly more of whatever chemical) thing or personal chemistry thing or a combo of a few things. in verpa if I am not mistaken are known to also have same poison as other false morals.(you might know more about this and perhaps was a mis ID and not true? gyromitrin) anyhoo, caution is always a good thing in my book, esp if it sparks some research for the person to learn more about why or why not they are listed both as edible and not edible. And of course there are several false morels that have varying edibility, folks may mis ID and consume other false morels.

I think its gunna be a good season here still lots of snow up north and will have a good amount of ground water after being dry and lots of fires easy to get to this sucker was found 50m from an area that burned last summer so hopefully can find a basket of these big suckers.. I thought it was a football in teh grass
