Lining the bottom of my fruiting chamber

Okay... I'm going along with the PF-tek have cakes colonizing very quickly and with no contamination so far (knock on wood) but I'm working on getting the rest of my stuff to set up my fruiting chamber.
Currently I'm using a couple large rubbermaid tubs with plastic sheeting over the top for the fruiting chambers, and I had planned on using perlite to line the bottom of the tubs, but after seeing how much perlite it takes, and how much it costs ($6 for an 8 qt bag)...
So... what are other options for lining the bottom of a fruiting chamber that you all have used and recommend?

Pearlite is the cheapest....is $6 too much to spend? How many 8 qt bags do you need?

I really can't think of anything cheaper then perlite.

It was taking one of the 8qt bags to line the bottom of the tub and I was getting it from a nursery up the street that was charging over 6 bucks after tax for a single bag. I should go to lowes or home depot and see if I can get it cheaper. But I was just looking for a way to save myself another 15 bucks.
I guess I'm just wanting to see something other than mycelium to prove to me that the money I'm putting into this is doing something :-p Oh well... that's part of the game

Theres 1.5" lining the bottom of this chamber. The $20 is there for size reference. There's still about half of the bag left. Do you have a lot of grow chambers, or are you lining an entire closet with perlite?

Duhh...just re-read your first post.
But yeah, I wouldn't recommend Home Depot for anything for a number of reasons...Lowes all the way. I bought a bag of perlite and vermiculite, both 8 quart bags, for $5 total.

yeah... We have 3 fruiting chambers between me and my roommate.
For some reason I thought it wouldn't go as far as it did, 2 of the tubs and a little of the third with one bag.
But yeah, I really need to find a cheaper place to buy the perlite and verm... that nursery charges over 5 bucks for verm too.
