I'm going on a trip to Cancun, Mexico Thursday and was wondering if I can take a Knife about 3-5 inches long on the plane? Not for protection but as a use of tool for exploration on land and sea.

There is no way they are going to let you on the plane with a knife, regardless of its intended use. Just buy a knife in Mexico, very cheap and easy to find.

Well, this was before the terrorist attacks, but I took a sword back with me from Africa when I visited. I'm pretty sure that they won't care if you have a knife as long as it's obviously in your luggage, taking it on your carry-on, which I know you wouldn't do, would be an extremely stupid move

if it's not in your carry-on luggage and is legal to possess at both your destination and point of departure, it should be fine. you may have to declare it, but it shouldn't be a problem.

You should be trying to figure out how to get knives out of Mexico. You can buy them all over. You can get a pretty nice switchblade for 5-10 bucks. Then sell it for $20+ when you get home.

Don't try to take it in your carry on. Pack it in your luggage to be checked in and tell the ticket taker that you have a knife in your bag to be checked in. I think you should probably be alright as long as you declare you have it and don't try to act shady.
If you really wanna be safe, just call the airline company.

yea just put it packed in your luggauge that goes under the plane. and put it deep in there so they wont think you can just wip it out. i brought a knife to mexico. aswell as i brought a few machetes back and i got my bags searched at customs on teh way back. no worrys. aslong as it doesnt pose a threat buy cutting through the material and poking a luguage dude.
peace
