FungiPerf Oyster Patch: Straw To Grain to make spawn?

okay so I have an oyster kit from fungiperfeci and I am so anxious to start from scratch.. I was wondering if it would be possible to cut the bag open and steal a small amount of colonized straw and do a straw to grain transfer to make spawn.. I am more interested in spawn at this point than to transfer to more straw..
If so how much do I use and what is a good tek to do it? What water/rye ratio should be used for quart jars?
If not, how would i go aobut transfering to more straw? Must i use absolute sterility that is involved in doing grain to grain/ culture to grain?
Please answer ASAP as I am already firing up the Pressure Cooker..

You will need to keep it 100% sterile if gooing to grain, you can use the oven Tek or... Get a few ziplock bags pasturizeze finely chopped straw using shroomgod straw tek. Fill each bag halfway with straw and put a nice fist sized clump of broken up hay spawn per gal bag filled halfway. Shake, compress, roll and rubberband or tape it in the log shape. Into the incubator for 4-7 days and it should be colonized. Now you have a half gal log of hay that you can fruit as is, or you can break it up and use it as spawn to even further increase spawn volume, or just put it into a casing. You should get a good 3-4 gal of hay spawn from this.

Hm. I would think that spawn-to-grain would/could work, but it seems like a digression in the steps.
Oysters do not fruit well from just grain, they have to be spawned to bulk to fruit mushrooms..
I would just spawn the colonized bag to more spawn.

Well, I think maybe I should just be patient and wait to get some cultures/wedges..

Make a jar of liquid media. And add a peace of mycelium to it. Then all you need to do is use a syringe. No grain to grain.

Any links to a tek for liquid media? Is there anyway I can start spawn from this fruit? Or will I have to repeat teh cycle spore/culture/spawn/fruit....
no shortcuts?

I think the best way to go would be to clone one of the fruits you get or a sterile piece of the colonized substrate on peroxide agar and go to grain from there. I've put tissue straight into grain and bypassed the agar step before and had pretty good luck as well... There was a 'tek' in the cubie cultivation section way back that had a section on making syringes from sterile pieces of stem tissue blended up in water, I can't remember the name, I think it was niner tek (?) or something, heh. Anyway, I bet that would work well too, oyster stems are too tough for eating anyway. You could make a lot of inoculum real fast that way. You'd still need to keep things sterile though. And definitely test out the mycelium slurry before you do a bunch of jars if you go that route. Keep the pics updated if you can , I wanna see how much their kit yields DH

Large jar add a dash of nutritional yeast, a spoonful of honey, and a teaspoon of dextrose or any other simple sugar. Then add water till you have enough. Punch a small hole in the lid so you may draw the inoculate into the syringe. Cover the hole with duct tape. Maybe add a polly filter in the lid if you like. In a week you should have enough growth two nock up like 20 jars or bags. Agar is the way to go. But if you are just starting out and dont have the propper equipment. Then I think the self contained jars would be a easier/more productive choice for you.

I use Karo. And have had good success with all edibles with Karo-tek.

This is from last night. They've grown more since then. I'll snag another pic tonight..
My question is, they keep forming primordia under the plastic, so I keep cutting more holes in the plastic.. Should I do this? There covering the whole thing practically.. i'll end up wiht no plastic.... lemme know.

i'm no expert on this subject but it is my understanding that the primordia should only appear where holes have previously been made.
from what i interpret, your saying the primordia are forming and you are puncturing the plastic at these specific sites.
personally, I would establish a high rH chamber and take all the plastic off in this situation. just keep in mind that I have very little experience with oysters just lots of experience with straw in general. this could be a bad idea (tm).

I've had problems with my oyster bags doing that too when I let them sit a long time without poking holes, usually once you get a few clusters past the pin stage it stops and the excess pins will just die off. I would leave the plastic on and quit cutting holes if you think you have plenty made already.
they look pretty good so far, but might benefit from some more air exchange to keep the stems from stretching...
