Diversity of mycelia forms after UV-c treatment * 1
    #27742621 - 04/19/22 07:43 PM (2 years, 30 days ago)

Has anyone found that a variety of fungi producing one type of mycelia, when it is exposed repeatedly to UV-c in a UV transparent container, then produces a very strange variety of mycelial forms including in terms of color, rate of growth, texture and other oddities when plated out on agar?

Like fuzzy boogers mixed with various odd myc forms?

Obviously cultures that behave well and form fungi or sclerotia in a desired timeframe are clone worthy, but the diversity produced by UV-c treatment of LC can be surprising, evidently.

I've noted that UV-c has been used repeatedly both commercially and clandestinely as a mutagenic agent, often this is for producing things like sporeless oysters or cultures that are hardier.

I think it is an interesting method, with drawbacks but some benefits as well and it is rather a simple matter to experiment with at home by just finding the exposure time that kills the colony and then decreasing it, and giving it time to recover in the dark so that the DNA is less likely to repair.

Perhaps it isn't really an advanced subject, but breeding mutant traits into other lines can be somewhat advanced and I may get around to that before I leave the board but perhaps not.

Anyone observed UV-c mutant diversity such as I mention, maybe with an exotic species or two?

I expect that the answer is no, but it is worth asking anyway.
I found threads that mention the technique but could not find one about this topic, if I have overlooked such a thread feel free to delete my post.

I'm curious too. I long time ago I held a UV-C to some mycelium on a little wedge I transferred to see what would happen. After a few seconds it burned it, the mycelium eventually turned brown but fresh fuzzy white mycelium grew back a few days later. That's all I remember unfortunately. I've been thinking of experimenting again.

Sounds like a great place to start!

Of course most mutations are not good for the organism and I am not touting this as a way to do anything or make anything better.

It is just fun and has a small chance of being productive, but a good chance of being educational... I hope.
