Interested in selling on eBay. How do I determine the shipping of an item? 1

I never sold anything before anywhere. I'm completely new to this. How do I figure out the exact shipping of an item? I'm guessing a scale is necessary. What other supplies should I have on hand?
I'm mostly going to be selling small items since I don't have the room for relatively big items.

I haven't sold anything on eBay in over a decade, but a lot of platforms will integrate shipping costs on your behalf. eBay in particular, I believe, has negotiated reduced rates with the US Postal Service, so I would suspect that if you enter the item weight and size, the platform may handle the rest with regard to informing the customer of shipping expense and collecting payment. Don't take my word on it though, as like I said, I haven't sold anything on there in very long while.
Generally speaking, if you want to do the legwork, you can lookup shipping rates yourself at any carrier website, however you will need the basic origin and destination information, package weight and size dimensions, in order to obtain a fully accurate quote.

All the independents (e.g. FedEx, UPS, DHL, et al, also provide shipping rate calculators on their websites)

Thanks . I'm sure it'll be simple once I start actually doing it. I have to find inexpensive packaging in bulk.

I have operated online businesses where I have shipped before, although again, this was decades ago now. However, it looks like ULINE is still kicking, and they had a good selection of shipping material at decent rates back when I used 'em.

So theres two ways to ship if you are using USPS, fixed or calcuated postage. If you choose fixed, the price is fixed for a specific size of pacakage with a reasonable weight limit (probably cant send a bunch of steel bars thou). eBay has preset shipping options to choose from for what you are selling.
The other option for shipping with USPS is calcuated. If u do this route, u need a scale that can measure in fractions of a gram or ounce. U weigh the package, measure the physical dimensions then use a postage calculator to calcuate the price of postage to a specific city/state.
Thats the basics. Check on USPS.com and explore around to see how it all works. If you want to use UPS or FedEx, same thing, explore the site and become an expert in how it works.
The alternative to online is going to a store and having them calculate it for you.
Hope this helps.

If your items happen to all be small enough to fit in the flat rate USPS bubble envelopes that's an easy way to go, that's all I did when I sold tinctures on Etsy.

Most carriers have an estimator where you can input dimensions (weight, size, etc.). I often use that to get a "ballpark" and then list a flat shipping amount.
You can always include free shipping, but I feel like that doesn't result in an increase in bidding to compensate.

Who even bids on ebay anymore? I shop there a lot but just buy now for whatever I want. I'll factor in whether they charge for shipping when deciding if it's a deal

Yeah, nowadays ebay is basically a last resort for both buying and selling.

I sell on ebay. All you need is some Poly Mailers Envelopes and a scale. When you are selling the item determine what type of shipping you will offer, in this case most likely First Class or Priority Mail. When the item is sold it will ask for shipping details this is where you enter the weight in lbs and oz. Then you add the dimensions of the package which is usually listed on the mailer L x W x H. Print postage. Apply to package and hand over to USPS.
