Are These Golden Teacher True Albinos???
    #27737229 - 04/16/22 11:18 AM (2 years, 8 months ago)

Hi, I posted this to the pub too, but hoping to find some more specific discussion here.

Can anybody tell me what is going on with my golden teacher fruiting? I can only find one other reference to an occasion of this happening, and all of the discussion was centered on cloning these albinos.

What more can someone tell me about what is going on here? I only used golden teacher spores. I'm dazzled by what could be going on behind this growth!

Welcome to the Shroomery.

There's lots of genetic diversity in spores. It's just showing off some of that built-in diversity. If you'd prefer a more detailed discussion, maybe request that this thread be moved to the Mushroom Cultivation board.

hopefully someone else chimes in but I think this is called a "Chimera"... which means there are more than 1 phenotype (albinos but also others)

Yea... I'm 100% noob. I'm not sure how to make that request, but I would like to know more about this for sure.

What beautiful bio diversity. It's almost like being chosen by something. How could it be so random? I mean, these came from the same liquid syringe.

I’ve never cultivated but couldn’t you clone those albinos from the stem butts?

Absolutely they can be cloned and spore printed in that state.

I believe chimera is the correct term, sometimes we see this in dogs/cats and the color of their fur.  It's incredible to see, and it's so cool we see its beauty in everything from kitties to mushrooms.

For example, look at this cutey.  Chimera cat.  Note the complete spot where the split occurs, and you can see the same with the mushroom too.

It's a little different with the shrooms because of multispore genetics. Even the individual shrooms contain their own genetic code and can potentially posess different characteristics.

Clone those albinos for sure, each fruit in a different petri and expand and grow each to try and capture the best of each of them. With a little luck they might drop albino genotype spores with potent fruits, then everyone will   you forever. New "Albino Teacher" variety. :awesome:

There is a good chance you won't be able to get the albino trait to stick, but it's worth trying for given the opportunity.

I let the last little guy open up for 36 hours after optimal harvest time. Colorless sporing. No black sporing of any kind, no gain of pigment like leucistic would suggest, totally different stem and cap structure from the rest of the colony. It's even hard to see in the picture because it is the exact same color as the perlite in the background.

I am afraid this breed may have to go down unstudied and relatively unrecorded. My third stab at mycology and this is what was produced, in a very rudimentary incubation and fruiting environment. I cannot even begin the cloning process... don't even have the vocabulary to get started. I assume there is a timeframe on getting live cultures... but all of the albinos have dried from the first flush. If I get another one, do you have step-by-step instructions that can be followed to continue researching these?

Just need SAB and some nutrient agar. Agar plates can be ordered or made yourself pretty cheap. agar packets can be found at Asian markets (telephone brand is very common), just need a sugar source added. malt extract or even instant mashed potato flakes are often recommended, but just about any fermentable sugar/starch can work (even the cloudy water from washing rice/grains)
. This covered the basic steps. Very often there might be some contamination, but that can usually be cleaned up with future transfers.
Sorry if everyone here hates this guy too.

This is a my attempt at cloning a store bought mushroom. It wasn’t the freshest looking caps, but I took the tissue samples  from a thick piece at the base. i have already cut out the two badly infected pieces, and letting the mycelium grow a bit before making a transfer.

Thank you! Hopefully I'll get a few more fresh from another flush, but I can try to clone from the dried stems as well it sounds like. It's been an interesting ride so far... it's definitely unfair that someone more experienced didn't get these before me! But I'm getting caught up quick now.

Updates?? Any luck with second flush or culturing from a dried shroom?
