what should fully colonized wbs smell like?
    #2773619 - 06/08/04 02:06 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

what should fully colonized wbs smell like when it is taken out of the jar to be cased? should it feel slightly wet and slimy to the touch? or is this a sign of contamination?

It may sound stupid, but it is a mushroomy, earthy smell. And yes, wet to the touch is normal. Slimy could go either way, but if it is white, you are probably good.

yeah, ive grown out of 1/2 pint jars with brf before so thats the only "mushroomy" smell i know. it definately still has that scent, but sort of smells like wbs also, which would be expected i guess. Main thing i was concerned about was wet to the touch...cause brf cakes feels dry like styrafoam

so is it normal for it to be wet and come apart into individual grains, or should it stick together more?

sounds like you had your WBS maybe just a little on the wet side when you prepared it. Did you let it drain for a good 30+ minutes?
After I have let mine sit and drain for 30 minutes, and most of the water has gone down the sink, I sit the strainer on top of a bowl, and place some paper towels under it(the strainer, so it wicks up some of the left over water. I do this, because I have noticed that if I tap the bottom of the strainer, quite a bit of water still comes out.

Surface tension seems to prohibit some of the extra from draining out, but the paper towels at the end suck it right up.

Like a nice flush of shrooms on a casing after they are fanned and misted, the yummy shroom scent that even picked shrooms have.

In short....the greatest smell there is, once you know it , you KNOW it.

Fresh cubies , mycelium, and a whole growing misted casing all smell pretty close to each other, as long as they are healthy.

If you take a fresh cubensis mushroom and break the stem and smell of it,then that is what the WBS should smell like, nothing else.

Like Psilocybeingzz said,"In short....the greatest smell there is, once you know it , you KNOW it."

I agree!

Fully colonized jars should smell like fresh mushrooms, a pleasant smell. Any other smell is a sign of trouble. Wet is okay, and it can feel slightly slimy, just as long as it doesn't look slimy.
