Your post was the stoke this morning needed Nick...will be heading out later today to have a poke around at a new spot that features a creek running through a gully flanked by eucalypts, hopefully I can find something to contribute to the thread :grin:

Edit: Far too dry for subs still, but I think we found Gymnopilus junonius growing from a decaying trunk in the creek bed.

Not great picture quality...wasn't on a forage and only had my bike torch to illuminate. Great little cluster though.

I thought although no psilocybin was present they contained compounds similar to Kava?

On the weight of available evidence I'm going to agree that you're both correct here. Have never really looked in to the Gymnopolis sp. and can delete my posts, but may be helpful as a lesson on these laughterless Gyms :misinformation:

Will be a bumper season for subs I reckon with La Niña's influence not abating just yet. Nice light constant drizzle today and more over the next day or two, woohoo!

This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. If it has rained within the last 1-10 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, and the time of year is correct then it is certain that that the mushroom you are looking for is growing.

Went for a short scout in the inner south eastern suburbs after work today, managed to find a new patch of Psilocybe tasmaniana;

No subs yet, though I only checked a small area.

I'm in the west and it's still pretty dry out here. Yes we had a good few days of rain/cold but that was after a long dry spell. I think the mushrooms need some time to wake up still. I haven't even seen many inactives, some yes, but not a lot. This time last year mushrooms (not just subs) were everywhere.

Ah maybe it’s different in the west, I’m in the eastern suburbs closeish to the city and I’ve been for a few walks in the more northeast suburbs and both are full of inactives. I’m sure you’ll see some soon and hopefully subs too.

Out for a morning stroll/hunt on the Peninsula, checking all last year's spots with no luck as yet.

Spotted 2 or 3 similar-looking inactive, but there's really not a whole lot going on!

I was super keen after the last week of rain and dropping temps too, haha.

Last year around this time I had massive hauls.

Similar sort of thing going on for me, generally seems pretty quiet for both actives and inactives right now. Usually I use when the inactives pop up in my front yard as a gauge for when to start hunting but no sign of them so far.

Went for a wander down to my local spot on Wednesday and saw nothing more than some mycelium in the woodchips. Gonna go for another stroll tonight, hoping to at least see some pins or something promising haha.

More rain on the way so just gotta wait patiently I guess. Happy hunting everyone!

More gyms popping out of the mulch piles, maybe Gymnopilus dilepis.;

Also found my first subs for the season. At a new spot in the garden. Psilocybe subaeruginosa.;

Knowing full well I'd have little to no luck finding any subs in the suburbs with the warm weather and little rain we've been experiencing, I got itchy feet seeing Nickoloxious' photos and thought I'd try my luck today in the eastern suburbs.

As well as 2 regular spots I planned 3 new ones to scout for potential in the coming months.

Only in 1 of my regular spots I had luck finding these:

They may be pins but as you can imagine with recent conditions I was pretty happy to some life beginning!

Went out for a walk yesterday up in the eastern hills and to my luck I found a beautiful spot with plenty of shrooms! I was so happy! So happy I tried 5 more spots with no luck :crazy:

Hi all, new to message boards and mushroom hunting, wife and I are after subs to cultivate and I'm not asking for any specific spots but are there any tracks or generalized locations near Warragul I can go for a walk down to go hunting? any help is greatly appreciated :smile:

I've been out in the eastern suburbs all over the shop I've been finding more inactives than you can shake a stick at but not a single sub for the life of me. My local patch is yet to fruit anything as well. I'm starting to think it hasn't been consistently cold and wet enough yet for them to show up, which looks like is set to change.

Anyone else having similar struggles?

Hey, first-time writer here!

Had to reply because I feel you on this, been checking around my regular parks in the SE to no avail.

So far it's been a really annoying start to the season, spotty rains, temperatures only dipping for a day or two...

Fortunately we had a good days rain last weekend and the next rains/drop in temp the rest of this week should be good 👍

Cheers for all the info and beautiful shots over the years people, been a long time admirer of this message board. Hope to be able to engage more this year 🙏

You might be onto something there, Nick. You got me thinking back to photos Warrk posted in their sub fish tank moss terrarium grow thread showing myc spreading out against the glass, they document having kept the tank out of direct sunlight, not completely in the dark. If that's anything to go by, perhaps sub myc can handle low level light if its root system is solid underneath, and the right temperature of course.

These things they call fungi, interesting stuff!

Same here, no luck locally. A few pins was the last I came across a bit over a week ago that I posted in this thread. They were eastern suburbs way I had to drive out to so I haven't been able to go back to check on them. Keep looking, psbs - you might find them!

Haven't even come across many L ceres either which are normally, and annoyingly, everywhere by now.

Came across this slimey bugger last Sunday. Possibly a gym (?) it was feasting on.

That said, I am seeing some success in a couple of outdoor grow experiments I started last season! :dancer:

Another experiment from last season was making a number of sub smoothies and pouring them into various woodchip beds at local parks and reserves that I haven't seen subs grow before. Not expecting the smoothie tek to work but it never hurts trying. If successful, the plan is to keep spreading all around locally. Fingers crossed :cool:

You can mix fresh subs with tap water and blend it, use a spray bottle to spread over mulch.

As Sykadelic mentioned there's a tonne of great resources here you can look up.

I mainly followed Olive's methods as it seemed the most doable for me.

You'll see Olive uses stem in cardboard tacos to grow myc before transferring to woodchips. I had very little success out of this mainly from being super impatient and not being able to leave them alone, over misting, to the point the stems turned to sludge with some parasitic worms eating them. They may have even grown out of them, I dunno but I turfed them out.

Best results came from stem butts in woodchips in takeaway containers.

For smoothie tek, I followed UK Explorer's method. Pretty much what Jenk suggested.

Those tasmaniana are beautiful Nick, you must've been over the moon coming across those! I'll be doing a lot more hunting in Melbs East this year, hope to come across some myself. Same habitat as subs yeah?

They’re certainly interesting to find. Funny thing is the first time I remember actually coming across them was back in 2020, a year before I had confirmed what they were. At the time I thought they were just strange looking and tasting sub mutants. I was actually a little averted towards them because of the differences even though they were little LBM's that bruised blue. Just goes to show it pays to look into strange findings. :lol:

After a great chat about Rupert Sheldrake and fungal intelligence she set off with a small handful excited for her first experience! I'm happy to know that my first finds of the year went to a curious dog-walker who had the courage to reach out and connect :smile:

Looks like them to me. Did you give the gyms a taste test, the spore colour looks the part. The only look alike I know of is Tricholomopsis rutilans which has an almost white spore print & does not taste bitter.

Last year was my first season hunting; after pretty much stumbling over a small suburban patch 400m from home, that unfortunately quickly got trashed by someone else, along with another in the same general area. But late in the season I also found a better patch a short drive away, which managed to remain otherwise untouched.

After the recent rains and cold overnight temps I thought I'd take a look at "the good patch" a few days ago, but all I found then were a bunch of dried out mushrooms that clearly weren't what I was looking for - they seemed to be two types, either strikingly orange caps, or paler brown/beige caps with stems that were yellowish instead of bluing.

Since there was a bit more rain last night I went back this morning, and after initially only spotting more "non-useful" types (I'll still get any I pick positively ID-d on here: while I think I have Subs pretty much dialled in now, I'm also a little paranoid still...!) I was thinking maybe the patch had been infiltrated/overgrown with these others and started to head back to the car.

That was when the one with the split cap in photo #1 caught my eye. I crouched to take a photo, then realised that while there hundreds of larger obvious non-actives all around me, only just emerging from the leaf litter were also seven or eight clusters of pins like pic #2. A good reminder that I really need to take the time while down low to "get my eyes on", as I'd completely missed all of them up til then.

I stepped carefully away from the patch to head off, and as I was keeping my eyes to the ground to hopefully not damage anything about 5m away I spotted the single Sub in pic #3, nestled between several of those orange ones.

Left them all to get bigger, so will check back again and hope no-one else discovers them in the meantime, but things look promising this year - fingers crossed, anyway!

The orangey capped ones are likely L Ceres. I always find subs near those guys.

Subs are great at camouflage with their caramelly brown coloured tops in dried leafy litter like in your photos. It certainly pays to slow down, stop and get to ground level for them to suddenly appear. Good eagle eyeing!

That's some intense blueing in that split capped sub. Practically no brown visible.

And the second photo looks like it's gonna be a sweet cluster when they mature :evil2:

Finally got a chance to go check my patches this afternoon and all were full of subs! None of the dryer wordy patches yet that are in parks so I’ll be interested to see when those pop up but seasons well and truly started now. Happy hunting everyone!

Well after countless unfruitful efforts, finally made my first suburban finds of the season this morning at a local park!

First ones I stumbled upon were these, not many mature mushrooms but certainly plenty of pins which I might see to in a few days

Then after a bit more of a scour I stumbled upon these two great big clusters sitting next to one another

Also spotted a Stinkhorn and a patch of some Hypholoma while I was there which made for some cool photos

Very happy to have my efforts finally pay off :grin:

I went deeper into the forest this time, to try and look for a particular spot. but lost my orientation in the tangled mess of ferns and fallen trees. I spent quite some time bush whacking to find my way back to the road. Where I managed to make some cool finds along the way. This active gym in particular was a pleasant suprise;

Thought it might've been Tricholomopsis rutilans, but after a quick taste test. It was bitter. So this would be my first time finding an active gym in the forest. :cool:

Another decent easy method is to get a take away container or similar, layer the bottom with cardboard then add a layer of sub myc then layer of cardboard you can repeat this process a few times just once is sufficient, incubate at room temp is fine, wait til colonized then spawn to woodchips outdoor and tarp it. Let it colonize and birth it.

Ah cool, I've wondered occasionally what the orangey ones are, as they're the ones that also lead me to repeated disappointment to start with for my first season. But then I also realised that they were often a good indicator of patches that were at least worth a closer look.

Thanks for the compliment on spotting! I'm finding it like those "hidden eye" pictures that used to be popular - I'll be staring at a patch of mixed mulch and leaf litter and seeing absolutely nothing, but then notice one or two and suddenly they're literally everywhere I glance , including right next to my feet... :wink:

I popped back two days later to check and take some more photos but it's been so dry since they first flushed, it was like nothing had changed in terms of size... A bit concerned that they'll just dry out, and to be honest wasn't sure whether the right thing to do was grab some pins anyway or just leave them, in terms of preserving the patch. So I guess I'm waiting til we get the decent rain that's supposed to be coming from tomorrow, and then check again. Fingers crossed and all that.

So sorry no photos this time, but I'll post more when there's better to see - hopefully in the next day or two!

Those are leratiomyces ceres.
Try not to remove the whole mushroom when you are picking, use scissors or hold the base of the mushroom and twist and pull.
