horse dung?
    #2772607 - 06/07/04 05:51 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

can magic mushrooms grow in horse crap? i have some stables right behind my house and it would be very very easy to pick there. Ive read it in a few places but im not too sure. If i did pick any i would show them to my friend (an experienced picker) to make sure they were the right kind but yeah does any one know any information that would be useful to me? ex: if its true / when to pick / yeh.. stuff like that.

First off, where do you live? And yes, active mushrooms can grow in horse dung, a lot of the time in shavings. Around here in Maine where it's not all that hot, late July/August is when people look for them.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

lolhello doc!

horse shavings are where they take the horse shit out of the stalls and using wood chips and straw to help it scoop up better then they take it and put in a pile usually very close to the horse stall
youre gonna want to find a huge horse farm proly somewhere around 5 to start off with. check for those piles

These do!

Panaeolus subalteatus

Found from spring to autumn grouped or clustered often in rings up to two feet in diameter on open ground, freshly manured lawns, straw piles, all types of compost, dung piles, and roadsides in Ontario and throughout the USA (especially in Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Michigan, Washington, and Oregon). Optimum growth on MEA is at 86 degrees F. It occasionally occurs as a weed mushroom in commercial mushroom houses.

>"hey doc was i at least right about the horse shavings? "

lmao,Yeah, you were right about the shavings. In your own little way.

They put the shavings down in the stalls to obsorb some of the moisture from the horse urine. It makes it easier to scoop up,it's better on the horses hoofs(better than standing in their own feces) and yes they put it in one big pile. This 'pile' becomes a compost heap. You will find some sort of fungus growing in,on,or around these piles.Alot of farmers frequent these farms to get some of this pile to use in their gardens as fertilizer.
There is no straw in these piles-That would be Hay!From them being fed hay.The only time straw is used,is when a mare is giving birth to a foal and they use it as a bedding only!
Back in the day when I was into horses they did use straw, but only when they could not get 'sawdust or shavings'.

My two pennies
