Spore Droppings
    #2772595 - 06/07/04 07:46 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

When spores from mature mushrooms drop onto the substrate and casing layer can it inhibit growth on future flushes? Can spore droppings also contaminate, too?

They might cause contams but I've never had a problem with it.
Just turn everthing purple they touch.

Spore droppings won't cause contamination themselves, no -- spores, when they leave the mushroom, are sterile. Some microbial nasty -could- use them as food, but I don't think this is much of a problem if they're dropping on a casing layer -- it's more of a worry if they're dropping all over your perlite or something.

But if a large amount of spores drop from one flush it will slow the growth of later flushes won't it? They seem to.

Man I don't know about slowing down later flushes.
Not on any of my grows. I'm trying to get as many spore prints and syringes as I can. So I let the shrooms set untill just rigt to pick, but due to work sometimes I don't get there in time.
Thus spores were I didn't won't them. Spores from 3 grows ago are still on the perlite. Need to clean house one day or someday.
Hope that helps. PM if I can be of any futher assistance.

I take it you're using cakes. I've been using bulk growing for a couple years now. It seems that when I don't get to pick the shrooms in time, and they drop a lot of spores that it seems to inhibit the growth of the later flushes. I've never had any problems with spore droppings causing any contams until this last batch I did. After the first flush, I added another casing layer, and it got mold on it. I don't know why. I was perfectly sterile like always.
