Cakes have stalled during incubation
    #2772187 - 06/07/04 05:38 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I officially have three cakes that have stalled making me wonder if the others haven't also, what can I do to get the started again. The temperature is right so I don't know what to do.

have you loosened the lid on them and flipped them? They need oxygen, so it helps to replace the foil with coffee filter (if you haven't yet) and flip them over to allow air to move.

That would be nice, except for the fact that the moisture in the cake would most likely saturate the coffee filter, once flipped upside down.

Just turn the jar upside down and set it back in the incubator for a couple of days.

If you are confident that there aren't any contams in your incubator, then go ahead and take the lid off your jar and out a coffee filter over the top of the jar and screw the ring back on. (or if your lid is one piece, put on a coffee filter and put a rubberband around it.)
Then place it back in the incubator upside down.

(I'm only on my first grow... so you might want to wait for advice from others, but that's what I've been doing, and I have over half my jars almost done colonizing after 9 days)

So I should just flip my jars upside down in the incubater? IS that what others have done?

yes. leave the canning lids on, and flip the jars upside down. what percentage of colonization have they stalled at?

The reason for flipping the jars is to let the C02 drain out of the jars. C02 is heavier than oxygen.
How many days have they been in the incubator?
what is the temp inside your incubator?
Also, moisture content in your jars/substrate can cause them to slow down/stop.

They stalled at about 95% or greater, there are small spots left uncolonized. No signs of contams of snything, just stopped. There is alot of condensation o the inside of the jars, lots of water droplets. I believe they have been in the incubator for 17 days now. the temp runs between 81 - 85 degrees.

dude, you're right on track. my first jars took 30 days to colonize 100%. If you followed the PF tek exactly, then that condensation in the jars should be fine. Just flip the jars upside down, and give em another few days to a week. I've had small spots in my jars take awhile to finish up, because the verm in those spots soaked up the condensation.
