Noob here! 1

Always liked shrooms when I was young so fast forward 30 years & a couple of months ago I decided what the hell I'm gonna try growing some. At 50 I'm not looking to trip balls, just some microdosing and the occasional out of body experience. Found the shroomery, picked up some supplies & got some BRF cakes coming along. Just birthed 6 tonight & made 2 shoeboxes with em following Damon's coir tek, Bod's SB tek & Mushroomnate's SB tek. I got 10 more that are not far behind that I'm gonna put in a tub I made using Ziran's hybrid mono tek. Just trying different things you know. Also made some Agar last night from pasty whyte's tek. Hoping to get something good enough to drop on them plates & move on to grain in the future. Anyways, just trying to read & learn as much as I can. Got some pics but still trying to figure out how to post them. Thanks for having me.

Yeah, I made a SAB & followed all the sterile TEK's on here but I used a GT MSS. I've been lucky so far but I'm a realist & I know contam is probably gonna rear its ugly head somewhere soon. My backup plan is to throw any bad cakes into a flower pot outside with some leftover coir & see what happens. That's why I said fuck it & just dove in head first & made agar. I wanna start playing with that & up my chances of growing some baller shrooms. I'll post some pics as they come along.

agar is def the way to go for some killer grows, but PF tek is tried & true. i think youβll end up with some mushies for sure, but yeah agar is sick. itβs super fun to take clones & grow them out. but agar gives you almost limitless potential

Just an update on my shoebox grow 9 days in. Got pins showing in one and very small ones starting to show in the other. Accidentally deleted my first pics but these are 9 days in. Not sure what I'll end up with but I'm just happy to see pins on my first grow!

Nice! Going to be a nice flush by the looks of it. Smart move going ahead and getting into agar. It is the best. Grab you a clone from a nice cluster from this grow and you will really be off to the races.

Yeah I'm hoping to get a big fatty to clone. This came from a GT MSS. Got 3 other BRF cakes in a hybrid mono. Gonna birth, dunk & put 9 more in the mono this weekend so we'll see. Here's the 3 in the mono now. I know there a little gnarly looking but they pinned pretty good in the jars so we'll see how they turn out. They seem to be recovering some. I'm bottom watering, pouring off any unused water every 24hrs & misting every couple of days. There's a little bit of something on the top of the cake all the way to the right but I think it's just blueing. My concern is the lone shroom submerged in the water to the right. Thinking it might breed contam. Should I just clip it? Idk man gimme yall's thoughts.

Welcome To Shroomery!
Next time instead of SGFC you could try Water Tub Tek for fruiting BRF cakes.

I agree with this. I live in a dry climate, and had better luck with humidity chambers and water tubs for cubensis cakes. Truly set and forget. All the misting and fanning just mats the surface.

I jumped the gun & made that SGFC before I read they dry things out so that's why all the duct tape is there. I did read a little bit on the water tub tek and think I might try that on my next grow. Guess I'll just stick it out with what I got on these next few jars, see what I can get & regroup next time.

I did the same "mistake" (not really a mistake but it was a ton of unnecessary work with a soldering iron) and made a SGFC before even having colonized cakes. Fast forward 3 weeks and I had two shoeboxes with cakes that I shredded and spawned to bulk. If you plan on going to grains either way, then a SGFC is just throwing money away (like I did). Doing shoeboxes from BRF cakes and learning agar while they are growing is the way to go.

I agree, I'm digging my shoeboxes. They're pinning like a bitch overnight. The 3 BRF cakes in the SGFC I converted to a hybrid mono with duct tape, not so much. I'm thinking about putting 6 of the 9 cakes I'm gonna birth and dunk this weekend in the SGFC/mono and make another shoebox with the other 3. Not giving up on the SGFC but not really liking my odds so far. I'm keeping an eye on it. This pic is less than 24hrs from the last and they've definitely increased quite a bit in size.

yeah, it kinda shocks me that the SGFC or fruiting cakes as cakes is still so recommended. i donβt see how maintaining cakes is any easier or more simple than just putting them to coir. when i was first starting out, the SGFC was the most daunting part. glad i realized i could just break the cakes into a tub bc i would have been annoyed making a SGFC just to never use it again lol

If the cakes are bacterial, fruiting them as cakes is recommended, as spawning them can cause a lot of headaches. Healthy cakes that colonize in good time can be crumbled and spawned with good success, but if the cakes are sketchy, then fruiting them as cakes has a higher success rate. SGFC, though, I would not recommend for cubensis. Much easier options like humidity chambers and water tubs.

Got a 3rd shoebox going today with 3 cakes. Gonna dunk the other 6 tomorrow and put in my SGFC convert to a hybrid mono with duct tape. It's kinda large for only 3 cakes, could be some of my problem. We'll see once I get 6 more in there. They just ain't looking very sexy these days but I'm patient. No signs of contam yet so that's good. Definitely gonna retire this tub for cakes after this grow.

I would group your three cakes together, next to each other, in the center of the SFGC. It should help with keeping the humidity up.
