Shoebox pinning too early?

So hey gang, got a couple shoe boxes of layered rye/50-50 w/casing layer that I made exactly three weeks ago. About a week ago they started to pin a little bit, but the casing layer shows maybe a 15% casing colinization. Its pinnig a bit on the sides too. Probably about 20 buster ass pins on the top of each. Should I pick these and wait or dub tub this out today? Three weeks seems long for a shoebox; I've had monos ready in 14 days on average. Whaddya guys think?

You probably don’t have great surface colonisation due to excessive side pins all though I couldn’t say for certain without pics. Pins usually appear anywhere between 7-20 days. Longer for certain Strains (PE, APE, etc).
Spawn to harvest usually for me with standard cubes is anywhere between 20-30 days for shoeboxes but there are a lot of factors that will determine this such as conditions, culture health, depth of sub/casing.

Hmmmmm...The side pins really aren't really very many; the ones breaking through the casing layer showed up first. The cake is deep, maybe 6inches thick. Yeah, the culture probably wasn't great, from a plate that was likely never transferred. I also suspect that I am not getting 100% colonization of some of my spawn, which I have fruited before with actually decent results. I don't know, just wonderring. Nicew pics btw, thanks.

did you add the casing after the sub fully colonized? it’s my understanding that the casing layer shouldn’t be colonized if it’s added at that point. if you did a top layer at spawn, it’ll colonize. also probably depends on what you cased with. if you used a sketch plate to inoculate a jar, that probably didn’t help. 6” is probably a bit too deep. i think most people do 2”-4” tubs now

I'm thinking is too deep, and yes the casing layer about 1/2 inch was added initially at birth since I do the layering technique, not mixing. I guess they may be fucked, so I'll intoduce fruiting conditions; I have other projects if this fails. thanks folks!

6”!? Yeah that’s definitely too thick, especially for a shoey!

Alright alright alright still learning here! So maybe just one qt of spawn for future shoes; my qts are about 80% of the total jar. Still going with twice as much sub to spawn, right?

I do 1:1.5 in my shoeboxes, with the .5 being the top layer, so 1:1 + top layer.. but I'm pretty sure that 1:2 is also pretty standard

Alright thanks again! One more q whilst I have you here? I put two holes in the top of the top tub to put polyfil in. Should I make some on the bottom sides as well, or can I just place the tub on top? Or will those air gaps be too much and maybe I should tape it together? Haven't had a lot of success with the shoe dub tub thus far.

I usually do unmodded shoeboxes, and if I dub tub I'll just put the second tub on top if my substrate is wet enough, if it doesn't look like it needs the FAE, I've used micropore to tape the two together and leave the corners untaped... but I guess it's all preference

I would do a 1:2 spawn ratio at an absolute minimum. If you’re spawn is good it’s better for it to have a large water reservoir (the sub) to pull from resulting in bigger flushes generally speaking.
