First find, ID needed possible Pan. subb.?
    #2770330 - 06/06/04 11:54 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Well, I found these on a yard that I know to have been made up of sod and fertilized. This is in North Alabama. I just wanted to pick some to see if I could possibly identify them, as I'm trying to learn how. I read the FAQ and some things by mjshroomer and I'm seeing how to write these ID requests.

Habitat: fertilized sod lawn
Spore print: jet black, unable to get access to microscope at this time
Cap: ~2.5cm, light tan with brown ring, convex, slightly conical, mostly hemispherical
Stem: ~ 7cm long, ~.5cm wide, hollow, brown fading to cream white at each end
veil: none apparant
vovla: none
gills: appear to attach to stem, chocolate color, close, light at edges

The surface of the mushroom was cracked and I didn't get a chance to test bruising. I just planned to ID this one and throw it out.

Any help appreciated.

While the stem and texture of the cap really scream Panaeolina foenisecii, the spore print indicates otherwise. If you're sure it's jet black you might want to consider sending Teonan a PM to see if he's interested at looking at the spores under a microscope.

As far as activity goes... I dunno. Heh.

Very dark brown.

I'll get a comparison of the two prints sometime tomorrow, I hope. I've had this damn 8 megapixel camera sitting around for 2 weeks with no memory stick for it because I ordered the wrong one and had to return/exchange it(right one should be here tomorrow afternoon). Damnation!

I stuck that image in photoshop and played around with the levels/brightness/contrast and those spores defintely look jet black. Hrmph.

Not sure what species of Panaeolus that would be. The stem doesn't really look like subbalteatus, but perhaps they take on a different form when they're growing in grass as compaired to hay/compost/manure.

Perhaps this is true. damn phenotypes.

Well, thanks for your help. I've thrown that specimen out, as I'm just testing to improve my skills. I still need to find a good partner to go hunting with.

Just wanted to chime in --
I've been finding precisely those same mushrooms. Same stem, cap, gills, coloration, same jet-black spore print. I suspected that these specimens were pan subbs, but I too threw them out because the stems looked too thin to be subbs.

If I find any more today I'll post some pics.

hey guys, lawns i see these on. they are deff pann subbs... tested and prooved after 30 hours or so of reaserch. the pan foes that grow on the lawns i attend to also would look very diff than that. so im guessing the same thing. so nice find! its also hard to tell that those pics are really darker than they should be, didnt realize that until later. until i saw that it looked jus like the ones i find.
