    #2769886 - 06/06/04 08:42 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I guess you should read my title post and answer. BTW i saw some very juicy mushrooms growing in a ferry ring outside my grocery store and wanted to know if i should even waste my time picking them.

There's probably several hundred species that grow in the
"Fairy Ring" style. This is just a result of the growth pattern of the mycelium; it spreads outwards in a big ring and the mushrooms fruit at the edges when conditions are right.

As far as which species grow like this... here's a few that I've seen:
- Chlorophylum molybdites- dangerously poisonous
- Galerina autumnalis- deadly poisonous
- Several Agaricus species- ranges from poisonous to edible
- Marasmius species- inedible for the most part
- Psilocybe stunzii- active, but only found in the Northwest. Not Texas.

Here's some more info on fairy rings: http://www.bluewillowpages.com/mushroomexpert/fairy_rings.html (google is fucking amazing, you should try it  ).

nice pics ivi and what are you talking about dfw? it's rained a lot in texas this week. I don't live in your area but I know for a fact it's rained in that part of texas within the last week.

side note: have you had any luck hunting in the DFW area? I used to live in that part of the state (actually north of there) and I haven't yet had any luck there.

psilocybe cyanescens i seen a pic of this species (which is active, most potent in the world at that) growing in a fairy ring in the UK. Although i am unsure if it was cultivated or not.

Thanks for your kind words.

I've only really been into the mycology "hobby" for about 3 years. My knowlege is really just the tip of the iceberg. There's a ton of people on here that make my knowlege look like stuff you'd learn in kindergarden.  :smirk:

ToxicMan, LizardKing, and mjshroomer are just a few names of people whose knowlege of mushrooms dwarfs mine. These guys know mushrooms like the back of their hand :p Several people in the hunting forum have met with a lot of the big name mycologists. We've got several people here who do identifications down to a microscopic level. mj has posted a few images from his research using a scanning electron microscope. A few of our own have also discovered new species of active mushrooms.

I've still got a LOT to learn

From my understanding-Psilocybe azurescens(sp?)is the most potent psilocybe
