I want to expand my wireless lan at home. The hub is quite weak though, its range is poor, at least in the structure of our house as it has massive walls or something. I also want to give net to the neighbours, which live at the same house but still those walls... so if you tell me a good hub, which prefebably is friendly to linux, with good range, thats gonna be trippin

WEP is enabled on my wireless network. But what does that have to do with expanding the wireless networks' range And guys sorry if there is a confusion by "hub" I mean Access Point. Im gonna look at those repeaters, thanks... Or maybe I will buy a bigger AP. Peace

heh thats cool I have WEP 128 bit enabled, I doubt thats easily hacked. Also I can enable MAC filtering if I notice some illegal peeps
A wireless dude consulted me I could just buy a bigger antenna for my wireless AP, and that would expand the range, does someone have info if thats correct? -Cuba

Toad thats correct. I've never done it with an AP, but bigger, and better antena's on laptops can add as much as 25-50% more rnage. not bad at all for a small upgrade.
WEP 128 bit is still crackabe, bepencing upon how much traffic goes through your wireless network it could take as little as a couple days.

Near encryption types including LEAP and Radius are more secure than WEP.
Also, mac addresses can easily be cloned, so the filtering isn't much of a security measure either.
If someone is determined to break into your network, they will. Otherwise, consider WEP and mac filters just as visible security measures that will just deter wardrivers to drive on.

Apple just announced the Airport Express which looks pretty cool. It's a wireless bridge that also acts as a print server and can also plug in to a stereo to stream music to.
The apple site say that it won't extend the range of non-apple base-stations, but this article seems to suggest that it might be possible with certain manufacturers.
-------------------- The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame". In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience. And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him. "Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.
