Oyster-like mushroom
    #2768511 - 06/06/04 09:22 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Yesterday I went for a bike hike in the close by area. I saw this small creek creating a miniature waterfall and stopped to get a few pictures. Perhaps this waterfall created a moist atmosphere nearby, because there were some mushrooms growing close to it. Of particular interest, I found these oyster-like mushrooms growing on a fallen log:

I tried taking a spore print, but I think they were too dry to drop any. No, not even white ones. :-) I'm not sure about the log, but it was not spruce or pine. Temperature here (northern part of Sweden) have been ranging from ~5-10 C (41-50 F) at night to ~14-20 C (57-68 F) daytime. The caps were dry, not slimy as they might appear on the pictures. The size was perhaps 3-8 cm (1-3 inch) across. There were some larger ones on the log, but they were pretty dried out. The flesh (I only excised pieces from near the base) was pretty tough. They had no particular smell, other than mushroomy, and they did not bruise.

Picture of the "waterfall", 0.5 sec shutter time:

Any ideas?

Those do look like some Oyster mushrooms!

Id just taste a tiny little bit of one, and if it doesnt taste right, spit it out.

BTW--Awesome waterfall picture!

Yep, they certainly do appear to be "Oyster" mushrooms.

-Uncertain of which species they are, there are at least a dozen seperate species of Oysters..
