I bought some wide mouth (90mm) SFDs and a big sheet of 20mm ones from there. 20mm is .8 of an inch so that should work fine with 1/4in GE holes you think?

I’ve only used polyfil (for way too long,) was reading best way to apply the RTV. Some said it was difficult at first? Was thinking i’ll squirt couple drops, put down SFD and twist it 180 degrees or something

Those will be big enough. p9 may have an SFD/RTV TEK in his videos.

Me, I just squeeze a circular bead then push the SFD onto it and give it a bit of a twist. I do that firsrt with all I am making and then come back and lay a bead of RTV at the join of lid and filter.

My favorite lids are Ball Leakproof [grey]..

Hi. Two quick questions I'd love some thoughts on...

1. My first flush is happenings at the moment....some mushies I have picked as they were ready whilst smaller pins are still a few days away from being picked. I can see there are beads of water on the surface of the substrate where white mycelium covers it, however there are parts where no mycelium has grown and it does look like the substrate beneath is quite dry.

Should I mist to add moisture back into the substrate? Or as long as there beads of water on the myc surface it's ok?

2. One of my oat grain spawn jars has one grain of oat that has turned dark. Everything else looks fine and then myc has grown throughout the jar super healthy. Is the jar ok to use as long as I remove that one grain when adding the spawn to bulk? Here's a pic:

https://files.shroomery.org/files/22-10/712560930-IMG_20220313_095231.jpg

Thanks

Better safe than sorry .I’d toss it .  Looks like it’ll spread but you may be able save a portion. Black mold is highly toxic so be careful , be extra clean and quarantine the spawn in question so it doesn’t foul the rest of your  grow / environment with nasty spores . Any sign of spread and into the compost I’d burry it .

Yeah toss that jar there's no point trying to pull out that grain and spawn the rest, that's just where it's sporulating right now the mold is in the whole jar.

If I just wanted to a small grow (from inside 1 or 2 jars rather than tubs), could I just use my popcorn spawn for that, or does it need some extra substrate? And if I need something else, would there be something more convenient than coco coir bricks? It's really clumsy to use only a small amount (needed a saw last time...), so I'm wondering if for example sawdust+verm would work in that case?

Just make a couple BRF cakes and fruit them in a bag like in this thread

Also, breaking bricks apart is a lot easier if you just use a screwdriver like a chisel and a hammer. You can kinda peel the layers apart that way

lol I was considering doing this as well but I ended up just taking a sharp, thin knife and sliding the point in the long way and the coir seems to separate very easily after. Had to weigh it though because I've got no fking clue after that what % of the block it is.

I hear nothing of costco popcorn on shroomery. Seems sorta light on being able to hold water, no? And needs to be sterilized, yes? its corn.

(I just paid $22 for 10 lb coco bliss bricks)

I like hydro crunch. $15 for 10lb and other than a few tufts of fibers or a few random pebbles I've never had any issues with it

that must be a newer offering... I haven't seen it before. Very cool, and home depot carries it.

Its also odd that its not 5kg. its only 9.25lbs not 11.

It is an unusual weight now that you mention it lol. I've been using it since 2020 with no complaints. I got turned onto it when they ran a cyber monday sale of 2 bales for $16 and I thought it was too good to not at least give it a try. Glad I took the risk

I’ve seen people shit on using a spoon but I feel like it could work great. First thought I had was I should PC the spoon IN. mason jar with the lid lightly shut… Open jar in SAB to keep spoon sterile?

You use a flow hood now? I was debating on making one, but definitely don’t wanna spend more then 300-450.

One positive about using the spoon IMO for some, is less chance of creating air disturbance using a spoon vs mason jar. You’re supposed to shake master up beforehand and kinda twist mason jar at a decline to get grain out?

Nope no flow hood.  SAB works for what I do and stores easily, but for high volume it's not too practical.

PC the spoon in a jar or just wrapped loosely in foil, so long as it's exposed to steam it'll work.

You have to shake the master up regardless but you can avoid raising the master up above the prepped jars this way.  It could be just six and half a dozen but I find it works easier.  YMMV. :buzzaldrin:

I'm about to make some transfers from exactly one year old germination plates that have been in room temp this entire time. Now I'm wondering what are the oldest room temp plates anyone has successfully transferred in the past? What would be the estimated limit for when the colony actually dies?

I used one that was about 10 months old, and half that time the room was 100F+.

Well, latest testing of mystery problem is not looking positive. This time I changed my grain from millet to oats and RGS. The oats developed the clear wet spots that the millet had. Still have significant developmental delays and overnight mold well after full colonization and right when the tub or bag started pinning.

So next I will be testing the water source. The house I moved into late last summer draws water from a private well, and I don't know if there's a water softener. There aren't any mineral residues on bathtubs or sinks.

Anyone had troubles growing that they could link to their water quality?

If I were to use pint jars instead of quarts for grains how long would I need to sterilize them for? Still 15psi for 120 minutes?

Hmmm. You've got me beat. The oldest I've transfered out of was just shy of three months. No problems though. And as far as mycelium dying? I think they go more into a stasis for quite a while before dying. At least for wild caught things such as gourmets. We get moisture twice a year here. Winter/spring snow. Then the spring rains as the snow is melting. A few weeks to a month later that's it for the rest of spring and summer. Then there's fall. That's always a crap shoot. Could be snow instead of rain. Generally starts in September. Snow always by the first week of October. So basically about 75% of our yearly moisture comes from snow. That said without making this a freakin essay, point is. Mycelium is extremely rugged. Not saying that's the case for Cubensis, but I observe dried out Mycelium in 100+ degree heat all summer. Then fall comes and it gets active and fruits. But then again. Look at Texas. Cubensis grows fine there. They have LONG hot and dry summers after the spring rains. And yet, the Mycelium comes back to life. I suppose one of us should do some FAFO for science. Hell, I've got plates I keep transferring with no immediate intention of even going further with. I'll keep a few around. Try transfers at say 3 months. 6 months etc. I might have to chip the transfers out of the dish eventually lol. But heyday! Why not? Anyway, nobody wants to read a book of me running off with the mouth on something I might be absolutely wrong on. I know gourmets and actives like Cubensis are apples and oranges. But hey! I'm never going to put these to grain anyway.  Nothing wrong with them. Just changing up my active grow with different genetics. So I have plates to play with. Edit: sorry guys. I've got a TBI and sometimes it's hard for me to convey thoughts. Whether face to face. Or typing. Not always. But it's extremely irritating to me. Because it's not all the time. So, didn't mean to make such a rambling post...

Thanks for that info dude  and I don't mind reading longer posts, I know exactly what you mean I often (believe it or not) try to compact my posts but eventually I end up writing a novel and I don't always understand how to convey my message in shorter posts. :typing:
