Casing Drain Holes
    #2769296 - 06/06/04 05:03 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Just out of curiosity, what do people think of using holes in the bottom of your casing tray for drainage? I've never tried this and its not addressed in the FAQ. Has anyone tried it both ways, and if so what were the results?

Yeah,I would assume it would dry out to fast.
Big bulk grows may benefit from some drainage, but for the small time do-it-yourselfer,it could be disasterous.
I'm assuming this now,I haven't tried it,but I know that my plants dry out pretty quick.

would holes on the bottom allow better air availability?

I put holes under my trays...of course nothing drains from there....I put them there cause once i got cobweb on the bottom and someone told me air exchange helps prevent cobweb....

Also i dont think they will cause it to dry....because its in a terirum, right above the geolite

dont know if it will dry it out, but holes in the bottom are supposed to be a necessity when dunking casings, if u put a bottom casing layer. so i hear, i havent tried it

I haven't seen many people who use them on this site. But on one of the other sites, people seem to swear by using holes for drainage of excess water and mycelial waste. Of course the casing teks on that site seem to advocate really soaking the casing layer.

You use it so you can mist heavily whille in fruiting and not drown the mycellium, whan makingthe casing and whatnot if you maek drain holes, nothing would come out. The mycellium takes allot of the water out the grain so my misting hevyyou can get the same effects as a rez effect casing onlly your feeding them the water raher then it being stored.

When I said it may dry it out,I was assuming that it was in a fruiting chamber providing it's own humidity,as mine.I don't use perlite or geolite, nothing.

So if I put holes in the bottom of my casings they would suffer from evaporation of moisture from top and bottom, thus drying out!

I see people using perlite and geolite and setting their casings ontop of that-IME,I find that is too much humidity. But,I live in a sub-tropical area so it stay's humid anyhow.

I like things just the way they are, no holes needed.

Malabar, PES H, South Americans

I seem to be able get any strain to put out like that by keeping it simple.

Afoaf use holes in some of his containers mainly because he dunks them and he hasn't had any problems yet! During his last grow, he went to dunk his three WBS casings in preparation for the second flush. He noticed that alot of knots were forming along the sides and bottom edges of the substrate where it shrunk away from the containers. He decided to remove the casings from their containers after dunking and fruit them out of the containers. He used 2 1/2 pints of WBS substrate and 1 1/2 cups wet vermiculite as the substrate in each of the three casings. The bottom lined with wet verm and cased on top with 50/50 verm/coir. The first flush did really shitty in the containers but here's a couple pic's of the second flush.

This is his set up. He runs the VICKS Coolmist 1hr on, 1hr off, 1/2hr on, 1hr off and so on. He usually mists the sides once a day to help keep the RH up. Those were also dunked before that flush, he thinks that helped alot!!

I do have one question though.
Are those 3 mushrooms in the last pic growing from the tray the casings are setting on?

Bottom left/center of second pic.

It appears to me that those 3 mushrooms are fruiting from your dresser top!Or the outer most part of that blue plastic?Maybe I'm blind, but they do not seem to be fruiting from the same as the rest.I'm just curious.

Great flush though!!

No, not at all! Those fell off while setting up for the shot. I just laid them there, their from that casing! See the empty spot behind them? The shrooms attached to the sides came off really easily!! I have plenty more pic's if anyone thinks these are fake. Look Close!!
