This one has me a little stumped. I found these specimens on the forest floor of a local state park in Rhode Island, USA today, among the leaf litter. The caps are a tan/buff brown color, and about 7cm across. The gills are off-white, fairly widely spaced, and from what I can tell they are attached to the stem, if not slightly descending it. There is no evidence of a partial or complete veil. The stem is firm and white, and about 10cm long, about 1cm thick, with solid white flesh that does not bruise. Spore print is white.
I can find several to many "matches" in my field guide, but my best guesses so far would be either the platterful mushroom ( Tricholomopsis platyphylla ) or the fried chicken mushroom ( Lyophyllum decastes ).
Thoughts from the experts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Those look like Tricholomopsis platyphylla to me.
You need to verify the spore print color (white), and they should have been growing on or very near decaying wood. Please be sure to verify these features before you seriously consider eating them.
One other important feature for this species that is visible in your photos (the first one) is rootlike (threadlike) cords attached to the base of the stem.
Although rated as edible, not everybody likes this species. Also, some people get an upset stomach after eating them, so, if you eat them, eat only a small quantity the first time. When mature they sometimes develop a bitter flavor that can sometimes be eliminated with lemon juice. One of my books recommends brushing the cap with butter or margarine and grilling them over charcoal gill side up.
Nice photos and specimens.
Happy mushrooming!

I'd probably go with T. platyphylla . Rhizomorphs are indeed present, they were near decaying wood (one even had a wood chip attached to the base), and as I mentioned the spore print is most definitely white. I'll probably pass on tasting, if for no other reason than the rather heavy infestation of unwanted bugs and grubs.
Thanks for the info, cheers!

Yes, indeed, T. platyphylla, the "platterfull".
Pretty much the only big agaric you'd find at this time of year in New England, which is another useful character. I've been finding it all over the Boston area for the last few weeks.
We have eaten & and enjoyed it, with no distress to speak of, but caution is still advised. And you really want to find younger specimens, which will be firmer, and will lack purported bitterness. I'm sure if you go back to the same or similar sites, you'll find more.
I'm working on culturing it, and will have a post of my own with pics soon.
Nice!
