First agar plates
    #27687102 - 03/08/22 07:08 AM (2 years, 10 months ago)

Hello, I’m new to mushroom cultivation and would like some feedback on my first agar plates using a spore syringe. The pictures are from the first transfer after 4 weeks; these are two weeks after transfer. The process has been very slow; I suspect the temp is a little low at around 72F. Do I have mycelium here? If so, should I transfer again, let it go longer or go ahead into the grain? Thanks for helping a new guy.

What type of mushroom mycelium is that supposed to be?

Is your agar a pour or no pour? What the rate of agar/nutrition you used?

At 72F, room temp is completely fine for mycelium on agar.

Id start over if it were me. It doesn't look good for transfering.

Ive always had less then good results from MS. Contamination rates seem higher, excessive water from the dishes, hard to add just a little bit of solution (Can use a bread tie or inoculation loop)

Swabs are much easier to work with imo.

Thanks, these were pre poured plates from a grow kit company. I did 4 plates adding a few drops to each from the new syringe (shook it well and cleared the first few cc’s from the sterilized needle) All the plates were sealed with tape and placed in a sealed grow tub with cover to block the light. All 4 dishes developed the same and very slowly. The transfers (three rice sized pieces per plate) developed a bit quicker.  I can’t tell if this is mycelium, if it’s worth continuing with the agar approach or, if I should just use the syringe straight into a grain bag instead and take my chances.

Its alright for agar plates to receive light. You dont want to keep them in the dark anywho.

Them plates arent usable in my opinion.

Do you have a pressure cooker?

Do you have more plates available? I could send a couple swabs to try out / help you with getting some workable mycelium going & transfers to send to grain.

Thank you! I attempted brand new malt extract, pre-poured  agar plates with a new spore syringe. This time, I used a hoop sterilized by flame and alcohol.  I used one drop from the new syringe which contained several black specs. Using the hoop, I dragged the drop in a “Z” pattern. The plates were covered and placed inside plastic zip bags. Everything was washed in alcohol prior, including my gloves and surfaces; wore a mask as well. The plates will be at 72F this time not in the dark accept at night. Hopefully this will work. I will post pictures again soon.

Checking on progress; good, bad, ugly (hopefully success)? I'm starting out as well, at the beginning of my Thomas Edison journey. Looking toward agar as a near-future attempt at making a light bulb.
