Lookin good mane. Even better if there’s lotsa older ones thatve been there for some time and starting to rot and lost branches. Is there creek or anything nearby?
And I’m sure they’ll start popping up anytime now, if they havent already

Is that third picture an average profile/growth habit for a stand?
I’ve never come across them to my knowledge and Not really many reported in my area.

I found more of the younger ones closer to the river.  The older half rotten but still standing ones were about 50 yards or so from the river.  This part of the river had about a 10ft tall sloping sandy embankment before any box elder.  It’s really hard for me to I’d fallen/ rotten trees and limbs, but I am hopeful many of the falling decaying ones were box elder.

From what I’ve gathered, they can grow weedy with lots of limbs and can get pretty thick.

Similar geographic region and soil temps to you….
6 weeks you say? …I wouldn’t mind doing some hunting under a full moon 😆🌕

Very cool! I am optimistic about this year. Can't wait to get started. I am planning to start looking as I take my dog for a walk. It's supposed to rain a lot this weekend, and warm into the 70s

I'm not sure that soil temperature is really an ideal predictor for when ovoids will start as it is heavily influenced by recent temperature, aspect and rain events. Growing Degree Days (GDD) is the metric commonly used in academic phenology. Interactive tools through the national phenology network. https://www.usanpn.org/data/agdd_maps

I took this photo last night of Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata spores at 1000x.  It's from a spore print that came in the mail from Virginia.

They measure (8.5) 9.2 - 9.7 (10.1) × (5) 5.4 - 5.8 (6) µm, elliptical in side view, subrhomboid in face view.  In this photo an apical germ pore is visible on one side and the hilar appendage is visible on the opposite side.

If you are interested in microscopy check out the microscopy forum.

Good thing to remember is that piled wood chips that are rotting have a higher soil temp... they’ll sometimes fruit earlier and later from the composting heat

It been raining the past few days and temps have been in the uppper 70s in my area (MD). Do you think it's worth looking for early fruiters, or still way too premature at this point? Thanks all.

I’d say go for it. It’s definitely still early but you might find something.
