2 pans both blue stem pics inside
    #2768504 - 06/06/04 11:11 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

these three were found growing seperately on the same hay bail. the 2 mushrooms on the left look completly different than the Pan Sub on the right.
the mushroom on the left shows blueing on bottom of the stem, but they appear to be two different mushrooms.
both print black spores. i have a few more pics but i am out of up load space so i will get waterbug to upload a few more.
i just want to know if any one else thinks that they are 2 different mushrooms.
thanks

they do look sort of different, but I am pretty sur they are both pan subs. I have found many that look different all growing right next to each other before. It seems like they always look different. Nice find!

Yes mushrooms differ in a appearance, a-lot.

The descriptions that you read in books describing macroscopic features are just pin-pointing the basics, but the mushrooms vary a lot when other considerations such as weather and substrate come into play.

The books describe how mushrooms look for-the-most-part, but they do in fact naturally exhibit variations, often, usually just small variations from the descriptions.

I hope i described that correctly.. no two mushroom fruitbodies are identical, they're kinda like snow-flakes in a way.

They both look like Panaeolus subbalteatus to me.. i dunno

They are all Panaeolus subbalteatus. Ive seen huge variations in this species a lot....of course this variation is quite large, since they both were printing black and they were both growing from a hay bail, and they arent Coprinus, I would be certain that tthey are both an active P. subbalteatus.

Those are probably just sun-bleached Pan subbs.

I have found a diffrent active species (they bruise blue) that grows in my patch along with Pan subbs... The caps tend to be white to cream colored and have a glossy appearance. They often grow in tight clusters, and they drop black spores as well. They rarely pop up but from what I remember they're a little more potent than Pan subbs. I suspect that they might be Panaeolus microsporia or Pan. olivaceus.
