Oh look, a bill that introduces a 32-hour work week!

H.R.4728 - Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act

Finally, 4 days a week instead of 5. I hope this goes through and passes. And then I hope the cost of living goes way down, or our pay goes up extremely.

What do you guys think?

It will be a long time if ever this happens in the U.S. The sponsors of the bill are all lefties.
It's too bad because there is evidence that it increases productivity. But as we have seen with medicine, even if something is accepted in other countries doesn't mean we will get it. I think the best chance we have here is some companies adapting it, and other companies following suit. I can't see it being mandated.

You'd have to be a serious socialist to advocate for increased pay and better working conditions.

Yup. This will be driven by companies, not by legislation. If legislation could get things done, then Target wouldn't be paying cashiers double minimum wage.

I'd expect the tech sector to drive this, too. They can already work from home, and decreasing working hours allows them to attract talent without raising wages, while driving customers to their products (because what else are you gonna do on your extra day off, if not watch netflix?)

Eventually, it will spread to other industries that need to keep pace while remaining competitive as a place to work.

Bit like Ford and the 5 day workweek.

I allreaddy work 4 days a week but they are all 12s. For people that work less hours that 5th work day makes a big difference financially.

You aren't grasping the concepts being discussed.

I agree with this, but I'm a bit perplexed why it hasn't happened yet.  Most of the data I've seen (admittedly, not a heck of a lot) suggests a 32 hr work week can increase productivity, increase worker happiness etc.  So what is holding companies back from adopting this?  We know companies are good at optimizing profits and productivity.  I'd have thought a 4 day work week is a done deal.

The other issue is that there are still plenty of jobs where productivity is directly related to hours worked.  It'll be incredibly challenging to convince companies to pay people more to offset the decreased hours.

Companies are good at maximizing profits and productivity within a narrow range of possible options. A shorter work week is outside of that narrow range of options, and so it is not considered.

You see something similar with work from home policies: they simply were not even considered an option before covid. At least, for "real" jobs.

I'm sure its got some of that good old Puritan Work Ethic influence, idle hands being the devil's playthings and all that...
