Sometimes I shake twice. Three times is just playing with it though.
I tend to shake as soon as I feel the mycelium has a good hold on at least a few grains. I just want to spread it out faster — I’ve yet to have it kill a culture on me.
So — unpopular opinion maybe — but going grain to grain takes shaking one step further on a fully colonized jar. If your jar survives the shake, most likely clean, but if you (ignoring fucking this up) go grain to grain — you should really eek out any contams or know you have a solid clean culture. If clean, you get a lot more of it! Hehe

Hi, I had a day or two off from being able to check my tubs. Doing Bods tek and moisture isn't an issue...but it looks like I've got too much moisture where water has pooled into one place....it's also created a yellowy looking colour (bacteria?) in this water pool area.
Is there anything I can do? Maybe eliminate the excess water there somehow to reduce the chances of bacterial growth spreading?

I also just noticed a few green spots. Any ideas of what it is and what can be done?

Thanks again

It's looking a bit sketchy for sure. Tomorrow might give you a definite answer.

Is there consensus in the community regarding unmodified lids for qt jars and their efficacy? I know some growers have used them more or less successfully in the past including myself and some growers maybe still use them. I stopped using plastic unmodified lids after just a few runs because it never made sense to me how the exchanging gasses are supposed to be filtered without a filter
Maybe I'm missing something here so if someone has a theory on how unmodified lids actually are able to work properly I'm curious to hear your best arguments both for and against unmodified lids.

I wasted a lot of my life brewing beer as well. Nothing to show for it except a bunch of medals/ribbons, a garage full of equipment my wife doesn't know how much I spent on it and probably a swollen liver. These 2 year old sours are the last batches I brewed, still waiting on bottles:

Why do you say this time was 'wasted'? Is this a play on words?

Can't tell you how or why they work, but I like unmodified lids. Been my go-to for over a year now and manage to keep contam rates low.
I read somewhere in the "holy grail" no-pour thread that contams have a tough time navigating threaded lids, but that's all speculation. Just make sure you seal the lids before shaking. Cracked lid + shake = mold farm

Yeah it seems there’s a bit of a love/hate relationship on here for unmodded lids. I went unmodded about 6 months ago and never looked back, threw all my modded lids away.

Do y'all PC jars with the lids screwed on loosely? If so, doesn't non sterile air get inside the PC as it depressurizes and as jars cool down? I'm asking cause I don't have clear answers myself, maybe you guys tighten the lids during sterilization and then let the jars cool infront of the FH and that's where you crack the sealed lids open for the first time? I wish I knew the exact dynamic and paths of the moving gasses and water vapor from the inside out and back, maybe someone else has done the homework and isn't as lazy as me

I slack the lid 1/4 or so turn and do my PC cycle. I then let them cook for a few hours in the pc, tighten them as I take them out, inoculate in my SAB, slack off again for colonisation. Not had any issues in probably 100 or so jars. Not saying it’s perfect but it has been working for me.
Just remember to tighten the lid when you shake!
