I would disagree that spawning cakes is better since it takes weeks longer than fruiting them as cakes and you will only increase fruiting times and risk of contamination taking over, especially if you used spore solution to inoculate the cakes. I've spawned a bunch of tubs using cakes but all my cakes were inoculated with clean live cultures and finished colonizing with no issue. But to each their own, just giving you a little heads up so yes if you're planning on spawning those you don't need to worry about how to birth them.

Reading around, it seems to me that in a way you have the benefits of the 2 worlds: PF Tek to create the spawn, the bulk method for the yields, which seems to be better in order to have bigger yields. This is my first experience with mushrooms, so to begin with the PF Tek was the easiest way for me. Also the shoeboxes method fixed the problem of not having proper jars to use.
I'd have done agar, to G2G and bulk... I don't even know if I'll stick to the hobby, so let's keep it cheap and easy for now. : )
Do you see anything wrong in the picture? Does it looks like normal mycelim to you?

I know several people on here have or have had issues with fungus gnats. Does anyone know where they actually come from though? I read on here a long time ago that they come from house plants or the soil house plants are in. Is this true?
I'm getting a little nervous because I noticed a really small bug crawling around on the outside of my one of my shoebox lids and then I realized I've got all my veggie seedlings directly under all my tubs

Does this concern seem valid? If so I need to find a new spot for my tubs ASAP as I've got some really dense pin sets coming in

They come from fungus gnat eggs
I had to man! I had to! But they come from any decaying organic matter and damp soil. Or rather they come for said stuff.
They are attracted to mold. They are like stink on shit when you get trich.

Pour 200ml of warm tap water in a glass and pour in and dissolve a table spoon sugar, a table spoon of vinegar and a few drops of dish soap and stir around gently and then pour into some shallow container with big surfaces like jar lids and place 3-4 of those around the infested area and observe the magic!
And don't worry, I don't mind gnats I just exterminate them when they start to get on my nerves, never seen em hurt a substrate.

I've found organic vinegar makes a big difference as well, alot of apple cider vinegar isn't even actually apple cider vinegar it's just flavored. And you really want apple cider. I didn't know you could dilute it tho, I kinda figured. That might save some money. And sticky traps!
If you had trich or a little old piece of side pin or something, if you stick it to the sticky trap, it even put it in the vinegar it will attract them.

Yeah they love drowning in vinegar traps. I used some old pf tek half pint jars, perfect size.

Too early to tell what that spot is, myc can look weird at first.
But total yield is related to amount of spawn, shredding a cake won’t end up with more overall, but definitely faster and easier in my opinion. The one issue is that pf tek is good because it slows down/traps bacteria but shredding and mixing it will undo that. If they’re clean to begin with it’ll be fine though. Bulk Tubs are much easier than cakes in a Sgfc for me.

I fucking hate gnats lol. I was under the impression the gnats would eat your entire flush (if there were enough of them at least). Am I mistaken? Are they just a nuisance? I was under the impression that they were incredibly harmful to your fruits.
We get them every spring in our kitchen (I think they come from out plumbing/disposal) so I make a trap with AC vinegar, a few drops of dish soap and an apple core in a small glass. Make a foil lid with some holes poked in it so they can get in but not out. They only last for a couple weeks and then they're all gone
Is the general consensus for me to just chill out or should I separate my seedlings and tubs? Thanks again everyone, sorry for the dumb questions

The main problem*s are they spread contamination and multiply like a mofk

There was some decent conversation about them in this thread
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27024659/fpart/1/vc/1
I’ve never had them, so i wouldn’t know for sure what works and doesn’t.

That makes a lot more sense, thanks! I'll keep everything how it is for now temporarily but I'll work on giving each a separate area

Question I didn’t wanna dedicate a thread to. I have to accompany a family member to a rapid detox several states away for a 10 day period and have some colonized quart multispore jars that are gonna be ready to go right before I leave.
Being as they are multispore, would it be advisable to use them to g2g to several other quarts? Is there any good reason not to if the jars are colonized and clean?

Regarding gnats, when growing cannabis I used to use a pesticide during veg called sns 203 out of necessity and desperation to rid fungus gnats. It was mostly their “proprietary chemical”, rosemary and clove. After a while I switched to a home blend of water, rosemary oil and clove oil. It worked just as well as their inorganic pesticide.
I would never recommend applying those oils inside a terrarium to mycelium but using them in a diffuser around the house keeps them away.
You can get nematodes and inoculate your seedling soil with them. Then the fungus gnats can’t reproduce
Side note, I personally dislike the smell but many enjoy it

G2g, spawn or toss em in the fridge. If you’re gonna be gone for 10 days might as well spawn them

The 10 is more like a minimum than a loose estimate. I am gonna g2g them if there is no downside vs. when I’d g2g from a consistent culture master
Edit. I’ll just spawn it I already have clean coir good to go.

Unfortunately can’t relate to the problem but I’ve seen the rapid detox first hand once before and they put you on a lot of other “comfort meds” in the process. I don’t remember what the main one is called. The one don draper gets prescribed in mad men. Phenobarbital maybe? They do what they can to make it not hell.

I been makin mini peanut butta cups.
Half gram in each, 1 of em or even a half and I'm groovy and good to go out and do things, 2+ and I'm trippin a bit. Really lovely. Super yummy, no mush taste and low enough dosage that I can munch a few. Also a great way to make use of my uglier fruits. Might post a lil recipe at sum point

Please do, I've been planning a peanut butter cup recipe for a little while and would love to see how you did it!
